Mitral Valve Prolapse?

I just got a report back from a Cardioligist about a week ago and he said my echo report showed I have Mitral Valve prolapse with a sightly leaky valve. He also found that I had a birth defect called biscuspid aortic valve. This means that I have two leafs instesd of three.

He also said that the Mitral Valve Prolapse is very common, a lot of people have it.

Should I start looking else where for a career change?

Mitral Valve Prolapse shouldn't hurt your medical. I have a friend who was approved to join the Marines with it, only to fail the medical based on a previous knee injury (kind of weird). As stated, a lot of people have mitral valve prolapse but don't have any clue. My friend actually had hers found by accident.

Jets,

I've got the same thing, and it really wasn't a big problem.

The FAA made me get an ultra sound, Echo cardiogram, and a stress test, it was a pain, but in the end I got my 1st class med.

Do call AOPA, because they're very helpful.

Can this stuff come back on me later in life or is it something that should not worsen if I diet right and stay in shape?

I hate to spend a ton of money and time if it is only a matter of time to lose my medical.

Jets,

To the best of my knowledge MVP really shouldn't cause you any problems.

It's a structrual problem so diet etc. won't effect it, and assuming you're an adult it shouldn't change since you're no longer growing.

However, some times (rarely) people with a really bad MVP need to take Beta Blockers to counteract various symptoms.

That's pretty rare though. Honestly most people just go through life with no problems. You've just got a valve that shaped a little weird.

I'm 29 and had it all my life. I'm been on swim teams, done martial arts, hiked, etc.

In fact at my stress test they had the machine cranked and couldn't get my heart rate above 75 (i.e. I'm in great shape).

The other issue you mentioned I'm not familar with.

Talk with AOPA and see what they say about that.

I have BAV, and I hold a 1st class medical, though I have gone through OK City each time so far. Once a year I get an ECG and EKG from my cardiologist who says he doesn't need to see me for 5 years (my AME indicates that this requirement will probably subside within a few years (on an ind. basis)). It's not a huge deal for civil aviation apparently.

Edit: More info on BAV/Aortic Stenosis
