Missing 737 from Afghanistan: Conflicting Reports

There are a lot of news reports about a missing Kam Air 737 that couldn't land in Kabul due to a snow storm. This is where the journalism ends and irresponsible reporting begins.

ohhh, Kam Air! I was wondering why a Com Air 737 was flying over there, also wondering why Com Air was flying a 737.

When the reporter reads it on the news, they should clarify!

I wonder if any orbiting or geostationary satellites are picking up an ELT beacon.

I think this is the craft. Was registered with Nordair then Taca and now Phoenix Aviation out of UAE and leased to Kam Air.

Re: Missing 737 from Afghanistan: Conflicting Rep

When I was flying out of Afghanistan, Kabul Intl didn't have any instrument approaches, at least none that were military compatible; and it was a military field. At that time, the main aircraft operating out of there was the French Air Force Mirage fighter contingent for day-only ops. Wonder why the 737 didn't take a divert into Bagram Airbase, about 45 miles northeast? Good IFR field.

Wait...so did they find the plane? Thats a kinda big plane to just lose .... well see this is why you gotta fill out those flight plans. Then the SAR effort woulda been done before it was too late.

Re: Missing 737 from Afghanistan: Conflicting Rep

Kabul is a Day VFR Only field ( according to my Military pubs ), Bagram is a Radar facility. I spent an afternoon talking with the controlers ( Civilian Contractors ), at Bagram and one of their complaints is that Kabul wanted to control thier airpsace as if they had radar, they would assign headings and altitudes to departing aircraft. They also wanted to claim class D to FL250. Afghanistan is suppose to go IFR this April, but there are alot of players up there that don't play by any rules and they just trust dumb luck to keep themselves alive. Ironically the radar box for Bagram is called the coffin as that is what is resembles and what you'll end up in if you don't pay attention. There are Nasty hills up there. When I fly up there is its less than VFR I stay at a safe altitude untill within 50nm and get under positive Radar Control. The controllers at Bagram can talk you down to a 200' PAR, it is a slam dunk because of the steep terain gradiant.

Here's a better version of the photo, off the ISAF's website. The dot on the piece of wreckage appears to be red, but that is not consistent with the photo showing a totally white aircraft. Unless the white paint came off and the red is part of the old Taca livery or something, or rescuers shot a red paint gun at it to mark it.
