MiniGun Fu...

My crew members wanted miniguns so badly... the only problem is that without electrical power, they're useless. TF 160th has them, and everyone always envies the great toys those guys get.

Great video, though.

A buddy of mine works for a contractor who designs the mounting systems for miniguns and other types of weapons for Army and Air Force helos.

He told me that the Defense Department was strongly considering a project to mount the cannon from the A-10 in a chopper. Seriously.

I do that for a living, as a civilian now. Working in Afghanistan. Good pay, interesting. Nothing like 3,000 rounds a minute to get the blood pumping. Should be able to bank enough $$ in the next year or so to pay for ATP and be able to live like a human being for the next couple years after.

Here is a photo of me preflighting "my 'lil friend" :)

You work on/maintain the gun, or you actually go out on missions and shoot at the bad guys?! As a civilian?

All of the above. Although, we do not actively go out looking for a fight. We protect ourselves, and our assets on the ground, if need be.

Does this technically make you a mercenary?

No...

Noun: mercenary 'mursu`neree [N. Amer], mursun(u)ree [Brit]A person hired to fight for another country than their own.

We do work for the US .Gov

We are also all ex-military, mostly retired military. We are helping with the opium eradication here.

Why? Does this bother you?

You can read all about it in the May or March issue of Heli OPs magazine.

As a matter of fact, we are on the cover of the 2007 calendar. Not like it is a HUGE secret.

No, not at all. I was just curious and I guess a little surprised. It makes perfect sense, I'd just never considered the possibility of civilians in combat roles being overseen in a military action.

Although there is ample precedent. Dunno - was just surprised.

ColeyF, what kind of military background does your outfit require? Is everyone an ex mechanic, crewchief, aircrewman, types? Any specific training requirements?

You need Huey crew Chief / Flight Engineer time, Goggle qualified, Class II flight physical, Need to have worked with M-240 / GAU-17, and be able to pass a security clearance.
