military Pilots

If you go to the USAFA, then traditionally, if you graduate and are medically qualified, you then go to UPT. Not guaranteed, though.

If you are in a regular college, and are in AFROTC there, you will find out late in your junior year or early in your senior year if you have won a pilot slot to UPT after graduation, assuming you remain medically qualified. No guarantees.

If you go to a regular college and elect not to take AFROTC, you can wait until graduation, then apply to OCS (Officer Candidate School) with a pilot slot specified. If accepted, you go to OCS, then UPT. Still no guarantees though.

In all cases, remember this phrase, "The needs of the Air Force come first." That means that they can do whatever they need to, whether it's good for you or not.

oh ok that kinda sucks that your not gaurnted a pilot spot but thats life. So basicly you could be going in ROTC for AF hopeing to become a pilot and find out your going to be a infranty or what not. if you go ROTC do you still need to go to officer school?

k i did a little research to find my GPA and i guess im a 2.8. Now for the extracrucutar stuff, what stuff would that fall under? I am currently in a program at school called Mentor 1 you had to apply for it and out of 16 people only 9 got in i was one of them. I heard if you go to Civil Air Patrol that helps a lot on applications to colleges and so fourth, With all this said id like to hear all of your opions on this question, Would someone have a better chance of getting into the military as a pilot or going the civilian route(ill be just glad to fly any plane any where as long as i can fly!!!!!) An viper how much longer do you think the C-5 will be around?

[/ QUOTE ]

They are saying the airframe is good for at least another 40 years. They have already sent some to the boneyard, but I expect the C-5 to be around for a long long time. The C-17 is a good airplane, but it cant do what the C-5 can. The C-5 fleet is getting re-engined with more powerful, more efficient, more reliable engines (CF-6). They are also switching to a glass cockpit. These changes are currently taking place and we should have at least some updated planes flying the line by 2006.

It does suck to join thinking you will become a pilot then they make you do something else. I wish they would tell us if we qualify before we join.

After being in E-3's(constant deployments to tens somewhere in the Middle East) I definetely wouldnt want C-17's Great A/C but that baby goes to the same • places I have already been. C-5 always seems to break at the nicest TDY locations. What a coincidence

[/ QUOTE ]

We've been saying that the C-17 is getting the good TDY's. They stage out of Frankfut and we get Moron, Spain.....

You know, you can get a guaranteed flight slot in the Corps...

The smiley face is mentioned towards your comment? Is it guaranteed or not a pilot slot in the corps? From what I've heard, the corps has more strict requirements than other services.

The AF doesn't have infantry. They'd be happy to stick you in a missile launch control center, tho! You'd even get to wear a nomex flightsuit to work, just like the real pilots!

The Marine Corps is pretty tough, Brian. Many of the people that get commisions in the Air Force wouldn't even make it through Marine Corps OCS.

That being said, if you can qualify for a commision in the Corps, and you can meet the flight requirements, you can get a guaranteed slot at Naval Flight School!!

My good friends (Soon2bMarAce) is out in Quantico for TBS....he knew he was going to flight school long before he even went to OCS! That was his deal. Make it through OCS, you're going to P'Cola.

People don't realize that the Corps has the fifth largest air force in the world!

so the Corps is a possibility im guessing you have to be in great ysical condition and great grades? what about the navy? do they guarantee positions like the corps? An if some one would have the time to list the steps from high school on till where they are now how they made it into the AF that would be awsome!!

Justin Riddle's perspective article

MikeD's perspective article

Jetcareers article "The Military Route to the Cockpit"

Final recommendation: do a bunch of research in "The Miltary" forum. Lots and lots and lots of good information in here, but it will take time and effort to get to it.....do you think it is worth your time and effort?

Gotta be a real Stud (or Studette) to make it in the Corps - physically speaking). Grades? Don't screw up in school.

That being said, they're less concerned about how your grades are and more concerned with how smart you are. However, if you get crappy grades in HS, how will you make it to college?

Remember, upon entering UPT, that is where the real work begins. 12 months of 12 hour days. If any fo you are just starting their flight training(civilian) imagine what it would be like to start out flying a jet, or a turbro prop. Going to class, then flying, debrief, class, maybe another flight. Geting there is nothing, staying there, and not washing out is the real journey.

MTSU- A couple of my buddies went through JSUPT( Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training-Officers from all the branches together at the same base for their first 6 months of flight training.) Anyway, he said there were a few Marines there that were not all that smart, BUT he said none washed out due to the Corps mentality, the other Marines carried them all through

Man, Marines may not be known for their ability to run reactors, but we don't leave others behind. No matter what.....you've gotta get through!

If you try to keep a cut-throat mindset, you'll be cast out by your peers. Then, you're really screwed.

Just out of curiousity, what kind of license are military pilots issued and what are the typical ratings? Do the candidates that start out with zero time actually get a private pilot's license first after they're done with the initial training or is their first license a military pilot's license?

[ QUOTE ]
Comm, with appropriate cat, class and type.

Nice, huh?

[/ QUOTE ]See, that's what I was wondering about, Lloyd. Technically, yeah, they should have a comm license because they are getting paid to fly, but then why do they still have to apply for a comm license as per 61.73 of the FARs?

[ QUOTE ]
. . .why do they still have to apply for a comm license as per 61.73 of the FARs?

[/ QUOTE ]

They do have to apply....meaning that they have to fill out an 8710. In the section that asks on what grounds they are applying, you and I check "Flight test". They check the military box.

Or whatever it says....I've had a few...too many...

You actually complete your private in IFT Normally, it is done when you are in casual status awaiting UPT It is done by civilian instructors in a skyhawk
