MikeD A-10 question

How often do you do the SOAP tests? I didn't think it was done more often than every 50-100 hours, but from what it sounds like you do it a lot more than that.

Some know how to, but they're the minority. We'd get the SOAP/JOAP kits along with bird on XCs. So long as I could get to the top of the jet, I could pop the oil caps inside the topside cowling, and take the sample. Most all bases have SOAP analysis availability even for transient aircraft.

I'm betting if you stopped in MKE, most of the crew chiefs here wouldn't even know what you're talking about, these days. An engine troop, maybe, but I haven't heard "SOAP" or "JOAP" in like 10 years. We never do em on the R Model. Did a few on the C-5, though. If you want to scare the crap out of a crew chief, ask them why the sample you just took is bright red.

It was every 3rd sortie max, IIRC.
