Migraine - revisit

Doc- My migraines have continued after trying several preventatives. Effexor was now mentioned but I said I couldnt use that med.

1- If the FAA actually does change the ruling this time, do you think an approved SSRI type will be allowed for off label use?

2- Also read a 2007 article stating FAA was changing their rules 'within months' on ssri's, obviously they didn't. Do you think this summer will actually show results?

They are set to change the rules this summer. The requirements are going to be tight, the drugs limited to 2 or 3 and only HIMS Medical Sponsors will be able to handle the case (This is what my grapevine has told me). I doubt they will allow use of an SSRI for off-label application though.
 
Hi Doc -

My neuro doc said today that if my new dosage of inderal doesn't control the migraines he wants to try one of these to break the cycle and says I should be able to come off of them in the future: nortriptyline, topamax or depakote. Will these drugs cause a problem with a 1st class or do all three just require the 3 month wait after discontinuance even if for migraines.

Are special issuance medicals possible for TCAs with this usage?

Have you considered Beta Blockers? The only reason I ask is that I was on Imitrex which wasn't FAA approved. I ended up with a deferred Class 1 Med, used the Beta Blockers, and was approved for a Class 1, while taking the Beta Blockers. Something to consider.....
 
They are DQ. There is no Special Issuance for any antidepressant at this time. You will need to haver the FAA review your medical records.
