MiG-21 tail strike

That seems like a really high AOA for the wing on that airplane, yikes.

Thin, delta-shaped wings need AOA to produce lift at lower speeds. The MiG-21 has an AOA gauge, and although I've never flown one, the guys I know who have use the AOA gauge for performance in lieu of airspeed (like many other fighter aircraft do).

Fighters can also operate at very high AOAs relatively easily. As I've said before, in the T-38 I could have the airplane at a full stall AOA and still maneuver the airplane to Commercial PTS standards of airspeed, altitude, and heading.
 
Great book. Red Storm Rising is the best Clancy book hands down though.
I liked/am going to read it again soon, Red Storm Rising (I love the opening line from the book, best of his books)...but Cardinal stands out to me, prob because it's more "spy novel"-esq. I love that it's about Star Wars/SDI.

Have to wonder though, would Clancy re-write the part of "The Archer", given who it's loosely based upon.

True, but for it to be the mastermind behind 9/11...and also given that it had some of "Debt of Honor"''s ending in it (the attack). Just random thoughts on a Sunday night.

(and yes, much like Iran was our "friend" in the 60/70's...and now, not so much. Or Sadam being our friend when he was fighting Iran later on, only to go after him later...etc, etc, etc)

If you watch the video when they say she's flying she's in #53 or something similar. Then they show a formation takeoff with 53 and 21. 21 is the one that pranged it on. So may not have been her.

Yup, the caption says she's in 53, but 42 is the one that booped its tail.
Of course, this is coming from North Korea, so...
 
My fav Tom Clancy book, Cardinal of the Kremlin, references it and says it has the worst taxiways ever...truth to that? @Stone Cold ?
I only fly commercially to and from into Sheremetyevo airport so I don't know much about the layout. It always seems pretty quick in and out. The problem Southern Jets has is they're at gate 24, which is at the end of the terminal. It's not the worst airport in Moscow, though. That distinction goes to Vnukovo, where I am based. It's still better than Borispol airport in Kiev, though. It's all relative. @Derg @Cptnchia

I don't know. Generally they don't let us in the terminal. When we arrive we have to walk on the ramp through the baggage sort area, through cavernous hallways to the ground transportation area where we'll eventually get our passports back. When we arrive, it's the same but opposite.

I always enjoyed the plain-clothed leather-jacketed random digging through our bags on the way out looking for lord knows what.

I've not had the pleasure of experiencing that treatment. In Vnukovo, we go through the FBO at the business terminal. I've had to do that at some European airports though, with going through back alleys and on ramps to get to and from the airplane.

Now, when we go to Siberia, it's always an adventure that takes patience. There's one place we go called Tyumen. We go there once a month, and it's always a different procedure with them acting like they've never seen a business jet before.
