Who am I? Where are my pants?
Thats great that you like to dump on a guy who is already worked out. When you do that to them, how many of them would see a wayward piper while trying to run lists, grab weather, work radios and rejoin formation?
It's my job as the flight lead to clear for the formation. It's my wingman's job to be in position and not hit me.
It's not that I "like to dump on a guy who is already worked out" -- it's that, in training, there are only limited ways to test a pilot's SA, task management, etc to the same level it will be when there is an SA-6 barreling up at him. This is how you train pilots to perform and make decisions at a very high level, and it works extremely well.
BTW, all of the USAF's safety statistics and flight hours are out there in the public domain for the last two or three decades. I'd certainly hope that the 121 statistics are significantly safer, given the significant differences in risk that we are asked to take and in flight tasks we are asked to perform by our respective employers.
