Mid-Air Collision

And to the poster than said your altimeter isn't that accurate, who cares? Safety isn't about doing ONE thing, it's about a combination of a lot of things that make the flight go safer.

And I never saw anything about him saying to not look outside less...

If your altimeter isn't set right, you might THINK you're flying at one altitude, but you're flying at another. I think that's the point John was trying to make. Ultimately, whether you fly at a weird VFR altitude or the standards, LOOK OUTSIDE.

Yeah, the new handheld TCAS units are great, until you get someone in the plane that says "Yeah, I got him on TCAS" instead of looking outside for the traffic. It increases SA to a point, but it is no substitute for the Mark I eyeball. We've got the TIS system on a couple of our airplanes, and I hear people all the time (and have SEEN a couple of my students do it) say "I see him" while looking at the screen instead of outside. Yeah, that thing has a delay in it. It tells you the general direction, relative alt and general heading of the traffic at the time the info was received. That delay could make all the difference in the world. The more cool technology is put in aircraft, the less people will look outside. As for my students that like to use the TCAS as their main reason for looking for traffic, they tend to get mysterious "failures" of that system pretty often.

He was referring to being below 3000' agl. Above it, yes, fly at the FAR altitudes. I don't think NEFlyer meant to do otherwise...

If that's what he meant, it sure would have been nice to have him say that. Kinda sorta important to the topic of dicussion, huh?

BTW...The flightinfo webmaster Mark. Are he an FalconCapt one in the same?
Because I always assumed FC ran the site over there after his huge incident here at JC.

Don't think so. I read the thread over there and he is posting about this now...so my guess is no. He is a moderator though. Oh yeah, and he's also a •

I second that. Falconcapt posted my home phone number on their website when he and I got into a little scuffle. I posted a number that belongs to the rejection hotline and told him to call me anytime. He edited my post, called info and posted my real home number. I e-mailed mark and informed him that what was going on was wrong and mark stood by him.

FalconCapt and the webmaster are two different people.

I, as well, thought they were one and the same until quite recently.

I agree.

Read his original post. It mentions *if* flying below the mag course VFR altitude...it's there (although he mentions below 3500' agl, I think it's 3000', no?).

And yes I agree looking outside is your best defense. But flying at a weird altitude helps the cause, IMO. Why stack the deck against yourself? I thought it was a good idea, I guess most people don't...

Yup, 3000 AGL not 3500. My bad. And it does not relieve you of the requirement to look out the windows. I'll also keep the landing light on during the day if I am in a crowded area. I'll turn the landing light on whenever ATC calls out traffic with either flight following or an IFR flight plan. I'll do whatever I can to be more visible.

IMO, it's all moot. What's to say someone else isn't also flying the same weird altitude? Keep the lookout going, and do your best to stay safe within the big sky/little airplane theory. That, plus some standardization and SA, will be the best thing to keep you alive.

If you are VFR and below 3500 AGL then fly at 1800 or 2200 instead of 1500 or 2000. I used to do this all the time when I was back in the Northeast. Almost everyone else will be flying at an altitude that is an even 500 feet. It gives you a little more separation and I think safety.
Ya that's what I was getting at....By the way what was the FalconCapt incident?

Wow...he really posted your home phone number on the boards for all to see?
Totally...totally unprofessional. And not to speak ill of the dead but for Mark the webmaster to take a pass on sensuring FC. All I can say is wow!!!
I'd be heated!

Didn't you also post your own full name and where you lived? Anyone who wanted your number could have had it..

Didn't you also sign up and log on and pretend to be 2 people, who infact, are very real people, in an attempt to slander them?
