Meteorologist to Dispatch

I can tell you that what JetBlue's is looking for has changed within the last year. If you're applying as an external candidate, then they definitely want dispatchers with experience. Another option is to get hired within the company and work your way in to dispatch.

I have applied to a few smaller positions in addition to the ones I listed, and still nothing. I just applied to Express Jet, but I notice they also say "dispatch experience preferred". My thoughts are, if you're paying $15 an hour, how can you expect much dispatch experience? Just a thought. LOL. My neighbor runs the sim in Salt Lake City for Skywest Pilots, maybe he can put in a good work for me. If any of you ever know of anything that may suit me, I'd sure appreciate any insight. Thanks Everyone!

Yes, I am finishing up school at Jeppesen and I do have an interview with Ryan. Also correct is that I started a thread on here asking for advice on "a day in the life"...how to tour an op center in my area. That is how I got hooked up with a tour @ Ryan and after that tour, I kept in touch with the director of ops, sending a thank you letter, as well as a letter to let him know I was leaving for dispatch school and very interested in employment opportunities there. That is why I got an interview. Doesn't mean I have the job but will be great experience either way. Sure am hoping to get the job though!

Smart move...Best of luck in your interview.

@ Vortmax...btw, wishing you luck in finding what you're looking for. Try to not get discouraged - something will come along. It will come together... :)

Just got a call from Delta--I'm interviewing next week for an actual Meteorologist job with them. :)

Things went pretty well--everyone was very kind and it seemed like a great place to work. Along with 3 Meteorologists, the Manager of Dispatch was also present in the interview and asked me a few Q's. After the interview, I was able to tour the OCC at Delta and I sat in the Meteorology Dept. and observed. It just made me want to work there even more. I really hope I get an offer. Dang, I really want this one!

Still waiting to hear back. They called me 2 weeks after the interview and asked for my professional references, but I have heard nothing back since then nor have my references been called (now 3 weeks since they asked for references). I have emailed them asking if I'm still being considered? Am I still "in the running"? Nothing. They haven't responded at all. Of course I'm beginning to sense that I didn't get it, but I'm just trying to add everything up. Not sure how to proceed, but kinda bummed nonetheless.

Do you have phone number? Try calling them directly. It may be easy for them to ignore or miss an email (if that's the case), kind of harder with a phone call.

Hey All-
Well, the Delta Meteorologist never happened. I want to get into dispatch. I applied with Frontier yesterday. I will begin applying to anything I see now. Anyone out there with lots of experience looking at dispatcher resumes? Also, anyone know of anyone interested in someone with my background? Thanks Everyone!

Gee, sounds a lot like me ... 30 yrs ago ... no NEXRAD then.
BS in met ... started as a private sectors met doing GA pilot briefings and flight planning ... got my dispatch ticket ( you will be required to have that if you are to get a job with 121 sked opns. )
Now I work as a programmer ... got tired of the shift work.

Good luck.

Thanks Garret-that is alot like me, haha. I DO have my dispatch license. I earned it before I graduated with my met degree. I have been fortunate enough to work in the private sector for the last 4+ years, but we just don't do enough aviation stuff to keep me satisfied.

Hey all-received a call from Republic to schedule an interview next week. I'd like to tap into the knowledge of this forum regarding a few issues:
-I've never interviewed for a dispatch job before and I earned my license in 2006, so I better start reviewing some stuff. Does anyone have experience with the Republic interviews? Tips? I better start reviewing my Dispatch exam questions! ;) At least I'm safe on the Meteorology stuff!
-I applied for this job thinking it was with Frontier Airlines, but there is talk of them going back to DEN. What is the relationship between Frontier and Republic? I know I've read on here that Republic is expanding their Operations Center. This must be a good thing.
-How long do most people work in their first Dispatch job before moving on to a major?
-I'm a bit concerned about the $15.70/hour pay. I currently make about double that as a Meteorologist (And I have a wife and 3 little ones).

Thanks in advance for the replies. You guys are awesome.

Congrats on the interview!

To the best of my knowledge...Republic has been looking for a buyer for Frontier. You are correct in that Frontier is moving back to DEN. From my sources, DX for Frontier is still in IND for the time being. When they will move...uncertain.

That pay may just be for starting out. It depends on what the contract says. I made about that starting out and now that I'm working the desk, I make about 18.50 until my hire date at which I'll get a pay raise.

Hope that helps
