How'd you like how SLC is calling what's really 2000 RVR in moderate snow, about 6000 RVR in light snow? :)

Dude, the pilots I work with are lazy slobs. They, on average, fly 1.9 hours a day.

I talked to an old captain that went to fly for someone else and he was like "no one told me this was real work"

He also said the CRJ s an underpowered dog, lol.

I see FZ FG a lot on the METARs in winter but have never encountered it personally, UND only lets you fly IFR when it's CAVU :)

it's really too bad, I guess it's like the rest of the industry, dispatching at a major airline used to be a decent career, now it's just crap.

It's currently -18F in Butte MT. This is damn cold and it supposed to dip into the -20's over the night. I know the plane is happy we got a hangar tonight.

I won't be in the cold for too long. I'll be in Laramie in the morning, then off to Phoenix for the first time!

I'll have an airplane in PHX tomorrow too, and another heading to BIL.
 
I'm doing the fog seeding again this season.. with the temps dipping to 8F and snow on the ground all we need is high pressure in the area with calm winds annnnnnd.....

....you aint' seen nothing yet. We get fog here BAD in KSLC..it's just right around the corner (you have probably already have seen the fog here in salt lake in the past but VERY low freezing fog RVR stuff..)

you guys might hear us on approach doing low passes ahead of you guys in a few weeks.
 
It was nice to finally meet you in person Doug. Yeah I was expecting a less eventful weather day than what it turned out to be.

I'm spent.

Today was the last day of my trip and it had 7 legs. (5 of them to or from Sun Valley to Salt Lake.) Three holds. Two in moderate icing. (The kind that makes the EMB120 really shake/vibrate and you have to disconnect the autopilot to ensure that it isn't about to do something stupid like a uncommanded roll or tail stall.) One missed GPS approach at SUN. Approaches for 6 of 7 legs. One ILS to 150 ft above mins. (When SLC was reporting the "6000" ft.) One right after a front had passed, so approach in mod ice and turbulence, with wind shear all the way down to a nice stiff crosswind landing at SLC. Nearly an hour and a half total spent deicing. Oh yeah, mechanical problems/delays on the last leg of the day.

My shoes have been permenantly snow/ice proofed from walking in the type I de-ice fluid puddles at all the out stations.
Ahhhh regional turboprop flying in winter.

So where were you off to today Doug?
 
I saw you before I hopped on a jet to SEA.

Lemme think... Two maintenance problems, a "10 degree rudder limit" annunciation and an autobrake failure, both fixed prior to departure, de-ice, 30 min sit short of 34L because SLC departure control radar shut down (so they say but 34R departures were still launching and crossing westbound). Fairly uneventful!

The best part of the trip was watching SLC tower tell a Candler to expedite exiting the runway on a slick surface, she put a 737 in position and hold while there was a UPS 757 on relatively short final. The voice of the 757 pilot was priceless...

"UPS 123, your traffic is a 737 in position"

"Umm.. Oh, umm, OK....?"

I never have got a happy, happy, joy, joy vibe from the ladies up in the tower. Always a little cranky.
