Met Captain Sully Today

Found out yesterday that he was going to be doing a book signing in my area today (Huntington Station at the Book Revue). Got to shake his hand, have a 6 minute conversation with him and get his autographed book, Highest Duty. Definitely made for an interesting night.

Years ago (before he hit the geese) he let me have the main jumpseat on an airbus, despite checking before me (and actually flying for the company who's plane it was).

Really nice guy.

It's a pretty good book too.

He was in town as an invited guest of our company a few years back (presumably negotiating for us to sell his book). Afterwards he came and spoke at a pilot meeting. He had heard that we had a few former USAir pilots working for us and, before even telling his story engaged in some chit-chat. (where were you based, when were you hired? How do you like corporate? Etc)

Really personable guy. Got 2 copies of his book autographed. Gave one to my Dad.

Met him last year at a book signing too.... Very nice guy

Sure. He was the keynote speaker at a auction for four of my friends that lost thier lives in the line of duty. Having flown for his original airline, being an aviator, and enjoying his book I thought it would be nice to shake his hand and introduce myself. When I went up to him he said "I'm only here for the families of the fallen four and do not want to meet anyone else". I saw that to be unture as he was speaking with Coach Tedford of Cal, a local TV person and our Chief. So in my experience rude.

I feel kinda bad for him, actually.

He showed up to work one day, just like any other. And instead of getting to CLT and going about his trip, suddenly he found himself the center of public attention. He never asked to be a celebrity, and making the unplanned for adjustment from line pilot to publicly recognizable celebrity has GOT to be a rough transition.

I have days where I don't feel like meeting new people, but I can quietly "exit stage left" and disappear and no one knows the difference. He feels like that and wants to be quiet or get away and all the people near him who want to meet him now think he's a jerk. I feel for the guy, it's gotta be a tough adjustment.
