Merger Blocked

Hmm didn't have that one on my bingo card. This puts JetBlue in an interesting spot...they can't have alliances with the big airlines as that's anti-competitive, but also can't buy out an ULCC and compete against the big airlines...as that's also anti-competitive. Apparently they're kind of stuck just existing until they can afford to buy Southwest :ooh:

Do they get back the gate spaces they preemptively gave up in FL and the NE to Frontier and Allegiant trying to persuade the judge, or are they just out of luck with less gate space now too? Or was that only a requirement if they won?

How do you dxers at both Spirit and JetBlue feel about the merger being blocked? Are you happy, indifferent, is it good or bad to you all?

It’s bittersweet. On one hand it feels like JetBlue dodged a bullet but on the other hand those airplanes would have been very nice. It’ll be an interesting next few years for sure. My guess is an appeal but it can go either way. Best of luck to my Spirit dispatcher brethren which ever way this goes.

Also, I do believe the slot/gate divestitures were contingent upon the merger going through. So status quo on that front.

There's a good chance they could re-kindle the NEA. Have to wait and see on that since all this is so fresh.

Not too happy, a merger with JetBlue was the last real hope to getting industry competitive pay. Now that the pilots have to renegotiate their contract as well it doesn’t look good for us. The company has lost so much money positioning for this merger and we havent been profitable in a while it’s going to be a real claw from the bottom, chapter 11 in under a year wouldn’t surprise me

i can see Frontier coming and looking at spirit with those sexy eyes again... and be like hey you, want to try this again..
FERIT 2025
Spirit is less appealing now than they were just a few months ago. They’ve sold off a bunch of planes to lessors to get cash. I think Frontier and everyone else figures they will just attempt to buy the planes and gate space for a lot less money when spirit liquidates.

This is what I would put my money on. Frontier or Allegiant or anyone else who would be in the running to buy Spirit probably figures their deal would get blocked also at this point. In that case, you know how Spirit is struggling so you either wait for them the sell aircraft to free capital or you wait for them to go defunct and buy the aircraft at a discount anyways.

I would actually be shocked if spirit doesn’t cease operations in the next couple years. That is going to be a huge black eye on the DOJ when that happens. Subsequent mergers in the industry will almost definitely go through without government interference.

The judge/Biden's DOJ decided to screw over the merger in the name of better competition for "low cost consumers"...by making it so that Spirit will probably go bankrupt as a result of over-leveraging itself in preparation for a merger with either F9 or B6 and possibly cease to exist in a few years or less, thereby leaving a gigantic vacuum in the market for the very same "low cost consumers" that they were ostensibly protecting. Makes sense to me lol.

Everyone's tired. I'm tired and I've only been on this wild ride for a year and some change. C'est la vie, I guess.

I was looking forward to the merger. Would have been nice to get the extra gates/aircraft in addition to more staff. Seeing us integrate with Spirit would be good IMO but who knows what will happen now.

Sorry to hear about how things are over there Spirit peeps.

I choose the remain optimistic. Sure the path for us at spirit isn't clear at the moment, but there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
I believe in the economy, that if any airline wants to grow they will have to gobble up another. we are ripe for picking... F9/NK was always the best combo in my opinion. and probably would have gone through given the like minded business structures. So we shall see what the future holds.
