Memphis anyone????

Anyone live in Memphis? Or anyone know anything about Memphis?

Looking for suggestions on a place to live for a couple of months close to the airport.

Perhaps Kellwolf will chime in as he's a local. However, close to the airport is BAD. All the nice suburbs of Memphis are east of town ... Cordova, Germantown, etc. The east side of the city is pretty nice too. On the south side of Memphis I'm pretty sure you'd have to go in to MS to find something decent ... then you're stuck paying income taxes

Better to say in TN.

If it was me I'd probably do Cordova. A little less expensive than Germantown, still fairly nice, and only 20-30 minutes from MEM depending on traffic.

Thanks for the info - I'm not necessarily concerned about taxes and such as I won't be changing my 'official residence' - I'll just be there for a couple of months for a 'training event' - I'm just looking for suggestions on somewhere fairly close to the airport, cheap, and relatively safe(meaning I won't get mugged EVERY night) if anyone knows of any crashpads down that way.

PS - Considering the area around the airport is that bad - does TN have a concealed carry law?

Yeah, as Russ said, close to the airport=BAD. I grew up in that area, and I'm surprised I'm still here. I live in Olive Branch, MS now, so it's much better. The downside to living across the state line is the state income tax, other than that it's better. I'd second Cordova or Germantown. I-240 would give you a straight shot to the airport depending on traffic. The crime rate in and around the actual CITY of Memphis seems like it goes up everyday, but that could be the "liberal news media."

Living outside of MEM now, but I like mid-town a lot, personally. The area around the airport is seedy, but not as bad as rough parts of some other parts of the U.S., having spent time in both...

True. Mid-town rocks. The downtown area is getting a lot better, too. Even some of the apartments there are affordable....

I Lived there about 4 years.
The airport area is rough. I lived in Raleigh for a while, then moved to Cordova. It was about 30 minute comute to the airport down I-240.

If you're not in town that much, the Holiday Inn Airport has pretty good rates for commuters.

If you need a place, there are a lot of crashpads available. Might also take a look at the crashpad board at flightinfo.com. Consider also going straight south over the border into MS, cheaper, close and clean, unless part of your motivation is establishing TN residence to get out of income taxes, that is!

I haven't priced living out in Cordova, Barlett or G-town, but he's right. North MS is fairly cheap compared to other parts of the country. I had inverse sticker shock looking at housing prices after I moved from Orlando. I'm about 15 minutes from the airport (there are some houses even closer and still in MS), and it's MUCH cleaner and nicer than living in the city. The state income tax is really the only drawback, but I really don't think the percentage is THAT much. It's something like an extra $1 or two a week.

Yeah after looking around I've realized that MS is ALOT cheaper and not any further to the airport than alot of places in Memphis. I have absoultley no interest in estabhling residence anywhere so that doesn't really factor into it - I'm just going to be there for training for a couple of months then head back north. I know there are a ton of crashpads down there but I'm having trouble finding something with an opening in it - with Fedex and Pinnacle hiring so much it's keeping everything pretty full. You happen to hear of anything let me know. I'll check out the Holiday Inn - I found an extended stay type hotel right across the street from the training center that has a special rate of $26 a day but the catch is you have to buy 30 day blocks($800) a month or it's the regular price of forty something a day.

Thanks for the info -
