MEL

How many of you all are flying part 91 training aircraft (since this is in the CFI corner...) with MELs?

I've only heard of one or two that used it to keep planed from being down for maintenance due to certian discrepacies, like a radio going inop. But unless there is no maintenance easily available a MEL always seemed to me to be more restrictive than to simply rely on 91.213(d).

I find the issue comes up in the training enviornment due to a very common misunderstanding of 91.21 and what a MEL is - a misunderstanding made worse by the unfortunate focus on 91.205 and its idiotic mnemonics.

What do you do if you have an item that is broken and is not in the MEL? Say static wick. My initial guess is that you cannot go fly, but I am not sure.

Tear the rest off and pretend like your plane never had them in the first place.
