MEI Ride

Hey All,
I'm going for my MEI next Wednesday (May 12) and I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips or any other advise before I head down. Talking to others around here it seems like it won't be too bad. Thanks!

I've heard it's not a hard ride at all. My CMEL ride was actually easier than my PPAMEL ride. I've heard the MEI is somewhere in between.

Best of luck and keep us posted!

Know the aerodynamics and performance material well, and be able to teach it well. Almost every MEI oral I have heard of involves a lesson plan about Vmc.

Good to know. I've had to explain Vmc to some degree in both of my oral exams where a multi was involved.

I finally got back in the airplane today. Everything went pretty well considering I hadn't flown the thing in over a year. I just hope our tower guys can figure out how to sequence traffic on intersecting runways...this thing isn't cheap!!!

Sounds like it shouldn't be too bad for the checkride. Some hardcore studying in the next few days and I should be golden. Thanks for the advice and I'll keep ya updated.

Did mine a few weeks ago. Really straight forward. Know Vmc inside out and how to teach/demonstrate engine failures (there was a huge emphasis on that).

Oh, and don't forget to lower the gear and don't feather the wrong engine! I hear doing that can end the checkride really quickly.

Unfortunately I came home with a pink slip today. There aren't many things that can make a guy feel worse, especially when the DE tells you that you're a good instructor and that you're better than "probably 90% of the MEI applicants I've had in the past". I taught Vmc like a champ and he was really impressed with it. What he didn't like was my lack of knowledge on the performance charts. I just overlooked them during all of my studying...not to mention when you're flying a Baron off a 13,337' runway, performance isn't much of a problem. That's not an excuse, but I would bet that if I was flying a low performer off of a shorter strip, I'd probably know the charts better. Anyway, I learned things today that I know I won't forget so at least something good came from the experience.

Yikes, that sucks. Better luck next time man. I was thinking of knocking out my CFII/MEI rides all in one day in the Baron (it would still be considered two checkrides, but taken consecutively oral/flight, oral /flight).

After reading this and reviewing my bank statement, I think I'll just do the CFII in a Skyhawk and hold off on the MEI until I can devote a full week of studying to nothing but multi engine aerodynamics and performance charts.

Chin up, JDE! It can only make you stronger. You'll knock the bottom out of it the next time around.

And that's the bottom line right there. I had a horrible tendency NOT to use enough (read: any) right rudder when I was a student pilot. Well, on my checkride, I brainfarted and on a t&g COMPLETELY left my feet on the floor. We started to veer off of the runway - naturally - and the DE said "Where ya goin? Where ya GOIN? WHEREYAGOIN?!?!?!"

I saved it and got my PPL. Haven't forgotten right rudder since.

Aviation is not a case of live and learn. It's learn and live.

Best of luck! Keep us posted.

The weight is finally off my shoulders!! I went back on Tuesday to finish the checkride and everything went well. The rest of the oral was nothing and the examiner flew the entire flight except for the last T/O and landing, which I did.

I think I kinda got screwed on the performance chart deal. I had a copy of a Singe Engine Climb Chart that was given to me in ME ground school. It had for an airspeed "136 knots" which is a cruise climb instead of "101 knots" which is Vyse. No one seems to know why the updated version of the Single Engine Climb Chart has the cruise climb instead of Vyse. The examiner said he called Flight Safety and all they said was Beech changed it awhile back, and that that didn't make sense. Oh well, I guess it'll be a mystery.

Anyway, I said I'd get you all posted on how it went so there ya go. Now I get to start looking for a job!
