Mei finished

Finally finished my MEI the other day at KDAB.

Had a 1.5 oral and a 1.3 flight, and overall i found it to be pretty easy.

Oral was all about single pilot CRM. Examiner asked me how i taught it to the students i currently have. Then he pretty much talked to me the entire time about what he thought was important, from private, Instrument, and multi training. lots of scenarios.. for example. "when do we abort the takeoff"... he asked why i did a takeoff briefing, and then said "ok.. you've brief it to me.. you told me if your engine fails after takeoff you will pitch for 105, etc. but how do you know when to try to land on the remaning runway and when to continue single engine?" we talked about how i may think i have enough runway left to land on and another pilot in the same position may think he doesnt' have enough runway. I was given quite a few scenarios like this.

That was about it for the oral.

The flight was straight forward. departed kdab, examiner took off, and flew the airplane. he wanted me to just teach him maneuvers first. steep turns, stalls, slowflight, Vmc Demo, Drag Demo, etc. he flew and i taught. he would intentionally screw something up... entering the maneuver above Va, not putting props forward, etc. and i would catch it. found it pretty easy seeing as im already a cfi and cfii with about 250 dual given.

We then climbed up and he wanted me to give him an engine failure. at 5000 ft i cut a mixture on him and he still pretended to be a student. had him do the troubleshoot, and secure checklist. then he said ok.. now your other engine has failed, now what? so i said well, im gonna try to retard the one that we know is still working.. so i had to restart the engine that i had originally failed on him. everything worked out. after restarting the left engine, we went into KXFL single engine. Short field landing was first. i hit the number just like i had planned. full stop.. taxied back to runway... he said "ok my controls". he taxied us onto the runway and wanted me to give him an engine failure on the takeoff roll. i did, and he pretended to be the new student and wouldn't pull the throttle to idle, so i had to take over. after that he said good, and he continued the takeoff. at 600 ft in the pattern, he wanted another engine failure, so i failed the right engine. He again pretended to be the student. He pitched up and we were approaching Vmc, so i warned him to watch his speed. he said ok, then he went to feather, but he tried feathering the wrong engine, which i also caught in time. he said good, you have to be very alert.. students will try to kill you any way they can in these airplanes. He gave me back the airplane and i flew the pattern single engine to a landing. it went fine. I then taxied back, and departed back to KDAB.

We landed at KDAB, and he told me good job, you passed. So to sum it up, it was single pilot CRM, and 1.3 in the plane of him trying to kill me.

Nice write up. I'm working on MEI right now. The examiner we use always wants the ground lesson to be on Vmc, so I know that going in

Congrats and good job! He's right about students trying to kill you in a multi. There are now more ways for them to do it! Just today a student of mine was practicing engine failure procedures and tried to shut off the wrong fuel selector while securing an engine. Luckily we were in a simulator so I could let him do it. It was fun to watch his eyes get huge! :D Gotta keep on our toes!
