Medical Reform Legislation Introduced

This is good news. There is no data that shows Private pilots fly any safer with a 3rd class medical versus LSA pilots without one.

This is also good news for us airline pilots if we were to lose a medical and unable to hold a third class, one could still fly a Cessna or Piper. Obviously, take care of your medical issue(s) and make sure you are ok to fly. But this new Bill makes it one less hurdle.

+1 AOPA

This sounds like a bad idea. I also like how the put an altitude and speed restriction like it will matter, most GA pilots by farm by being low and slow.

If you fail a medical, you are not eligible to fly LSA without one. This is why it's recommended that if you know you're going to fail, just let it expire and fly LSA.

Here's my favorite provision:

Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2 also includes a provision to ensure that pilots can fly under the new rules even if the FAA fails to comply with the bill’s provisions 180 days after enactment.

It's as if Congress knows the FAA can't possibly implement in 180 days.

I think this is a stupid bill. 1) If the cost of a medical every 2-5 years keeps one from flying, they cannot afford to fly. A medical is less than 1 hour in a C-150. 2) In my career of 45 years as an AME, I have seen multiple Class 3 applicants who are taking medications with potentially serious side effects when operating an aircraft, serious medical issues that would be dangerous at altitude, 3) Psychiatric diagnoses that IMO would interfere with safely flying an aircraft.

In Arizona, if you get a DL at age 16, it is valid until age 65 and after 65 you just need to get a new picture and pass the DMV vision test to renew. What a joke.

My buddy has a picture from when he was 17. He's 35 now and I just laugh at his DL cause he looks like he is 10.

On a side note, watch for class I and II medicals to go from $100 to $300 overnight with the loss in business that the Class III's bring.

I actually agree with it, provided the data supports that there is little impact to safety. How many LSA are falling out of the sky because guys are operating them without a medical checkup?

I'd bet the vast majority of an AME's business is class 1 and 2. GA is dying and it's not like you need a 3rd every 6-12 months.

Like most things in aviation, it is about money and nothing else. These medicals were the biggest waste of time and money. The AME's are going to loose money from the Class 3 and now raise the cost on Class 1 and 2. Who are we kidding, as if these medicals made the community safer. As if it isn't public knowledge that there are some AME's that are low threat and won't fail you so what gives?

Most of the population concerned and not flying in Class B airspace or other congested areas, so what is the heartburn? The fact that ambulance chasers will come after you should you be unfit to fly is enough scare for those that have serious medical conditions.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

I just found it ironic how one can be against a group that is fighting for someone considered "old codger who shouldn't be driving a car" when one's own professional union group does the same when it comes to medical issues, re-training, and firing pilots.

I think a good compromise is that you shouldnt be allowed to carry non pilot passengers unless you have a medical.

I'm ok with people putting themselves at risk, but not unsuspecting people.
