Hi guys, yet another color vision question...Currently I hold a 3rd class medical with Letter of Evidence for color vision (i easily passed the light gun test). So now I'm wondering in order to get my 1st class, do I try to do the medical flight test and then the exam or take the 1st class exam, fail it, and then try to schedule the flight test? anyone have any idea? Thanks so much for the help!

Did you pass the OCVT (operational color vision test) and get a letter of evidence for the class 3 medical. If so, call the Regional Flight Surgeon's office and ask for a medical flight test. They will tell you if you need to do the medical first or if they will authorize the medical flight test without the medical.

Yes, I have passed the operational. The FAA in OKC told me I needed to go get the exam done first. But even the lady on the phone had to go ask someone else, so I was a little unsure. Just seems a little redundant, if they know im gonna fail. Oh, well. Thanks Dr.!

Okay. Makes sense I guess. Just made my appointment. Thanks so much for the confirmation, can't wait to get rid of this thing once and for all. I remember 2 years ago I actually talked to you on the phone Dr. Forred. Thanks again for the positivity. It's so hard to convince other people that I don't just see in black and white hahaha. Take care!

Just as a follow up, i went today to get my 2nd class medical exam done... thinking the whole time that i was gonna fail the color vision part....well, basically i aced it. and aced it one more time to prove it to the doctor as well as the nurse. They still deferred me though. They called the FAA and they werent sure what to do with me....so now im just waiting for word back....anyway, im relieved!
