Medical Clearance while waiting

If you're medically cleared but waiting (till 20XX) for a class date, can temporarily taking a banned medication mess up your medical clearance?
It took me almost 8 months to get cleared before, so I'm really wary of anything that might cause problems with my medical clearance in the future.

You'll need to report it as far as I know. Ask a Flight Surgeon forum might be able to answer your question better though.

Since you hold the medical, you do need to report it. If you had asked at the time of the medical (assuming you went the non-PEPC route...I doubt they'd accommodate this at a PEPC) you could have asked the doc for the physical medical certificate and gone out and be legal to fly an airplane.

They don't mess around when it comes to this stuff, they can and will yank your medical in the future, plus can potentially fine you, if you fail to report it now and it comes up on a future medical examination.
 
What clearances expire after a year? Will I basically have to do the pub nat over again without the interview?
 
An airman's certificate is the same whether you're a pilot or a controller, so, same as a pilot, you need to report any conditions that've changed since you got yours to continue to (legally) exercise the privileges it grants. Medical conditions and disallowed medications included. If you can, it's best to just steer clear of them. Like Barty said, they take it seriously.

If you need to "retake" any of the clearance steps, they'll contact you about it. You don't have to redo the entire process again.
