MD88 Pilot Landing at the Wrong Airport

[ QUOTE ]
Doug - it's section 709 now. They did away with 609 a few years back.

Same thing though.

What is 709? It's that a check ride, re-training? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I remember it (609) being a "let's see if you're worthy of a pilot's license" ride.

Under section 709 it basically says that at any time they want to, the FAA can ask any airman to be re-examined for proficiency (or more to the point - deficiency!)

Latest is that the Capt. called the Chief Pilot as soon as he landed. Delta let him fly out the next day so I think he got away with it.
P.S. It was a Mad Dog pilot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I dunno man, word on the street was that it was a CRJ.

Is there a press release or is all of this just 'he said/she said'?

We all know how accurate those are... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

It was Delta Airlines, ILS was out of service at Daytona, maybe that had something to do with it.

Daytona was using runway 16. OMN is just 7.4 miles to the north and they have a runway 17. Also, there is now a tower at OMN so it might look somewhat familiar to someone who hasn't flown into the area from the north a bunch. I'd say about 80% of the time Daytona uses the 7's configuration, and things can look different from other directions.

Apparently it was a later model DC-9 style jet with a 142-passenger configuration.

Nuff said!

There is no way anyone who is paying attention could mistake OMN for DAB. One has a large airline terminal to the right (landing on 16)...the other does not. One has a LONG runway running left to right... the other does not. One has a large control tower in the middle of the field...the other does not. One says DAB on the MFD (if installed), the other does not..

I don't think it was Comair.. I would have heard about it in the crew room.

You have to stomp on the floor while you do that.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When you have not flown into there frequently, or in the past 4 months, have flown into 200 different airports since then, last leg of a 5 leg day, add some bad weather, or it being at night - and those subtles can easily be missed.

Pretty easy to do as an airline pilot if you're not careful.

I live in a weird world where Georgia only has ATL, eastern FL only has DAB, FLL/MIA, and PBI, and west TX only has ELP.

So it's pretty easy when you're shooting the visual and there's an airport configured closely to the one you're supposed to be landing at and it's right there.

I'd challenge anyone to to shoot a 150 knot visual into TUS after a couple of vectors and see who tries to land at TUS and who tries to land at Davis-Monthan.

MikeD, you can't play!

You left out the rather HUGE NASCAR track on the North side of DAB. I don't think OMN has that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

NASCAR? Sheesh, any red blooded American with a full set of teeth knows that the only real racing is IRL or CART!

*runs for cover*

The good ole days of open wheel racing are gone ever since the IRL-CART split. CART is more international nowadays it seems.

...and I will admit, if you put Sly Stallone's "Driven" on mute, except when the music starts, it's a pretty entertaining movie.
