MD-80 thrust reversers and squat switch

Browsing around Reddit and saw this. How are the reversers linked to the squat switch in the MD-80's?

I think the buckets are activated by the squat switch in the same way as the boards are. Sadly for that guy, the boards aren't as frisky as the buckets!

I've never flown one, but all the old time guys I know who do/did have inculcated in me the sure and certain belief that no one really knows how mad dogs work.

If memory serves correctly I don’t believe there is any mechanical linkage preventing the thrust reversers from deploying in air in the MD80 aircraft.

The only “safety” feature is the thrust has to be at idle for the reversers to open. They can open in flight if you are at idle.

I'm surprised that is adjudged airworthy (remember the secondary flight idle stops on the EM2?).

I know its not the same airplane, but reversers were approved for in flight use on DC-8's.

I believe you could deploy the TR's in-flight on a lot of the early business jets but it probably was not approved. I know you could on the GE powered Falcon 20's and Sabreliner 60. I was told that the Continental Airlines Sabreliner crash in Montrose, CO changed the TR certification on later jets. https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/AccidentReports/Reports/AAR7319.pdf
