Mazzie Flying Service

I've just read all thread about Mazzei Flying Service and Mazzei seems to be better than I expected. Thread of Photopilot, subpilot, jdflight and Daniel10 strongly inspires me to attend MFS. But I wonder if MFS is devotional to me as an international student.

I talked to Jerry on the line. He is the kinddest man I've talked with in English. He recommended Course 205i and then do course 111,112,113 instead of 214. because course 214 is usually recommended for US Citizen. I trust him but former course is more pricey over $3000 than latter and former period takes longer. Surely, I know if the course 214 is only for US citizen, although I join it, I will not be able to catch up with native speaker. Please advise me.. what way is more effective for me..

I appreaciate you in advance.

That is a tough question to answer. All those course numbers lead to the same ratings. Some just add more multi time and what have you. How much time you will need to complete the course on time and on budget really depends on you more than what course you purchase.

WARNING: YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR ANY TRAINING COST YOU GO OVER IN THE PROGRAM!

I warn you of this because way to many people have the impression that these courses are one fixed price because of the guarantee. Jerry is a very kind and friendly person but remember that he is a salesman and he gets paid based on what he can sell to you.

Mazzie is a great flight school and you will learn a solid foundation for your flying career. I just don't care for their marketing system. I have seen too many people blindsided by their bill after completing training.

subpilot, Thank you very much for your input!!

Under your opinion from your experience, Do you think alien students can catch up with the class such as American student? Surely, I know this question depends on their English skill. But if it is usually possible by a lot of efforts, I will enroll the 214 instead of 205i, 211, 212 and 213 to save over 3,000 bucks. Could you advise me about this?

And In Mazzei, Is it possible to do the first solo flight within 20 hours on the log?

Thank you in advance.

The English skills are very important to how fast you pick up concepts. International students make up much (I think over 50%) of its student population so they are used to your situation. I had two foreign students when I taught there and one had very good english (and was very sharp too) and got his private in about 48 hours. The other was weak on his english (and motor skills) and took almost 100 hours to get his private. Read the books, watch the videos, and ask every question you have. Find other students to form study groups. Write down questions when they come to you so that you don't later forget the question. There are a dozen things you can do to make your training go by faster and cheaper and I don't think the course package you ultimately purchase will have anything to do with it. The end result is the same. Good luck and have fun with it.

Dear subpilot,

I am very impressed with your response. I will study hard as you advised.
I really appreciate you.

Bless with you and your family.. All the time..

Subpilot,
I read this entire thread on MFS and gleaned some real gems from your blogs in particular. You mentioned that several pilots are billed extra for extra training despite the "guarantees", so I'm just wondering how much the average "above average" student goes over to complete the program.

Is groundschool structured from, say, Mon-Fri 8am-12noon and flights in the afternoon or is it basically a self-learning approach and you teach yourself the ground stuff from the books between flights?

Which books does MFS use? Jeppesen? Gleim? ASA?

How many students do they have at any time?
Thanks, and good luck with Eagle.

From what I saw plus my personal experience just about everyone goes over in some way. They will end up negotiating a ""fair price" if you were a good student but if you had problems then that was your problem. I personaly went over $2000 and I never had one hiccup in my training.

The instruction is a lot of self study and then one on one with your assigned instructor. They were trying out a private pilot groundschool when I left their last year and I do not know if that is still happening or if it was just an experiment. The school uses Jepp books and videos. and I would dare say they have close to 30-50 students at and one time.

Good luck in your decision.

You can still work during the winter but it will slow you down. You could also wait until next March/April to begin. Really up to you when you begin though.

WARNING TO ALL WHO WILL EVER WORK AT MAZZEI FLYING SERVICE!!!

You may not get good employment reports from them. I worked for them for 4 months and was on good standings with them. They were telling me at the time that I was on the "fast track" to become a stage check instructor and I was also currently getting trained to standards on their instrument and commercial courses so that I could begin teaching them. I decided to leave for my own reasons and gave my two weeks notice and I thought I left under friendly circumstances. At least there were smiles and handshakes involved. Now over a year later I have an employment reference filled out by the owner of the school and he says that I was...
1. unreliable,
2. did not work well with others,
3. had poor leadership skills, and
4. would not be hired again because of these reasons.

The employer who recieved this form asked me about it and was laughing because it did not go along with any of my other references. He just said "I guess we will just not use this one."

It makes me so mad though and I am thinking that this is a case of lible as they would have no documentation to back up what they are saying about me.

Had something VERY similar happen to me once. Difference is, it cost me a twin job which took me a while to recover from. Back in those days, trying to sue the guy would have been laughed at.

I've always been a Mazzie supporter since I knew a guy that went there and did well. What would you do different if you had it to do over?

What would you do different if you had it to do over?
With 20/20 hindsight:
1. I would not have gone to a large academy where you are just an account to them.

2. I would not have worked for a large academy for the same reasons.

I went to work at a mom and pop FBO(Memley Aviation) after Mazzei and the difference in the working atmosphere was night and day. I was part of the family at Memley and the students were treated with respect. At Memley, students got there license and walked away satisfied and grateful. At Mazzei, students got there license and then had a meeting with the owner to have the overage bill handed to them.

I don't want to go into another rant so I will stop. I will say that Mazzei does have a good product. I learned a fantastic foundation that has given me much success in aviation. I am only complaining because they are bitter that I left and they are now punishing me for this. Why do flight schools think that CFI's only deserve $12 per billed hour while billing the customer $45/hr, then they expect you to do everything else for free (ferry planes, go to meetings and company training, etc), and then to top it all off if you leave they regard you as an unreliable employee who did not work well with others.

When I was in the military, you could not say anything negative about anyone in their evaluation reports unless you had a documented history to proof your statement. I am sure the same principles apply to the world of business ethics.

I did all my ratings at Mazzei from hour 0, and instructed for a year, before leaving for 121 with 1100+ hours and 850+ dual given.
Just wanted to say I had a different experience, didn't leave on bad terms and got a good recommendation (Plus 2 LORs).
However, the owner has a tendancy to think that every instructor leaving is a "trator" and it is unfortunate. I don't know what happened with you but overall I think it was a great place to learn and work. Every plance has it's positive and negative sides though.

Unfortunately, I don't believe that's true for all aspects of business. . .and like the military, I do like the fact good employers gather a total viewpoint rather than an isolated case of possible personality differences.

I heard Mazzie guaranteed the rating if it was completed in a certain time, is this true? I ask because I met a guy who went there and he said for his IR he need 6 extra hours and the school made excuse so he would have to finish his rating after the set time period that they guaranee the rating? Anyone know anything like this that has happened? Do they really guarantee the rating or just the extra insruction?

that's their magic, guaranteed?!in contract,it is,but operationally, impossible, because they will tell you when you have been in the training that every student will only be provide 1 slot of 2Hour from instrcutor and only 5 days /week
now you know whether it's guaranteed.
