Mazzie Flying Service

Who cares? All anyone really wants to know is whether or not he told his "crapping out the storm window after a Mexico trip" story?!

:D

He never told that one. We heard of the applicant who put down only the name Richard on his 2710 form. He called in the instructor because of the lack of his last and middle name and then the instructor showed Jim the students passport that only showed the name Richard on it.

Huh. I alway had trouble with those 2710s, too. Could never find them when I wanted one. What did the student put on his 8710? :D

Don't listen to him. He thinks he's so great now that he's got his dream job. In reality, he's turning to an icicle. His heart started the process early.

:D

Duh, 8710...must have fat fingered that 2 by mistake. :)

10/20: Completed my first flight lesson for CFI today. I must say that my right hand sucks at flying. I am left handed so my right hand is already my uncoordinated hand as it is. I hope I get better soon because as it stands right now I wouldn't even let my right hand solo in the pattern.

Oooh. The guy who sits on his butt 16 days a month is getting feisty. Boredom makes the pilot grumpy, does it? ;)

Seriously, Subpilot, instructing is one tough gig, but the rewards are awesome (though not monetary!). You're in a great place to learn from some excellent instructors who are willing share their knowledge and skill with you. Just be glad that JD isn't there anymore. He liked to spike his students' drinks with Exlax just before they left for long, solo cross-countries.

Listen to what Jim tells you and you'll do great. If fools like JD and I could make it, you can too! :D

10/21: Made it through CFI lesson 2 and halfway through lesson 3 today. My flying is getting better but I still hate feeling like I am learning to fly all over again. On my landing today I had a stabilized approach and then I went to pitch up for the flare and my right hand yanked the yoke back and the plane ballooned. Very embarrassing when I hold a commercial ticket in my pocket. Have my CFI checkride scheduled for November 9th with the FAA.

10/24: Have not done S-turns and turns around a point for over two years until today. I don't know why I had such a hard time back then with these manuevers, they were a piece of cake to do. I am finally getting smooth on the controls while using my right hand to fly the plane.

10/25: Gave my first ground lesson to my instructor today. It was on airspace and it went well. I realized that it's not about what you know, it's all about how you present the information. Tomorrow is a full day and it starts off with me teaching a real private pilot student about VOR's. Good stuff.

10/26: Gave my first real ground lesson and it was very good. Later in the day my instructor and I went up to learn how to explain the traffic pattern. Tomorrow is takeoffs/landings and emergencies.

10/27: Today we worked in the traffic pattern getting all the performance takeoffs and landings done. Fresno has a cold front moving through the area. It is so nice being able to see the mountains on both sides of the valley. I wonder how long it will take for the visibility to go back to 5 miles with haze.

JD the Fresno unit now hires from the outside. They changed there policy since there UPT graduation rate was so low.

If that. I remember the first time it rained after my wife and I moved there. We'd had about two months of haze and it sprinkled on night while we were sleeping. I got to Mazzei early and looked out the sliding window and could see . . . MOUNTAINS! And not just the first foothill, but all the way to the spine of the Sierra!

Friggin' smog was back by the end of the day. Blah.

10/28: Yep, your both right. Today we went up to 4500ft to work on emergencies and the haze layer was right about there. We could see the tallest of the Sierra Mountains above the haze layer and could not even see the foothills below the haze layer. This place is disgusting. I personally can not wait to get back to the Northwest where you can see the Olympics and Cascades at the same time everyday.

Pretty soon you won't be able to see a damn thing! The fog gets a tad on the dense side.

People never believe me that when I grew up in the San Joaquin valley, we'd have days where you couldn't see 8 feet in front of yourself! And "foggy day schedules" where school would be delayed until the fog partially burned off.

We have the fog day things, in Columbus. For some reason only the northern part of the Columbus area gets them.

Yeah, but . . . in the Central Valley, they get FOG!

Their winter is months and months of thick fog with vis as low as a few hundred feet. It sucked. There were days when I couldn't see far enough to ride my bike, let alone fly or drive. When you're afraid to ride a bike at 20 mph because you're pretty sure you'd hit things . . . it's foggy.

Thank God for Duluth! :)
