Mazzie Flying Service

"Why does a scam PTF such as TAB airlines get their own forum"

I think it's cause Doug thought the level of discussion for TAB years ago called for it's own forum. The level of discussion on Mazzi is next to nothing. Maybe you could change that with your blog? You really want to make a difference? Get Mazzi to pay for a banner ad at jetcareers and put a jetcareers link at their website. That would probably get them their own forum, I would think.

[/ QUOTE ]yeah, that forum may end up disappearing in the future...having Mazzie as an advertiser would be a great benefit for them, they would get their own forum and it's also good for recommendation purposes.

They're so full they're putting students on waiting lists. I talked to the marketing and admissions director many times. Not gonna happen. The advertising budget is extremely small and they like it that way. The owner doesn't have a desire to get bigger. He only wants to be better. Staying small allows him to do just that.

I agree. There are so many students walking around and the instructors go from one lesson to the next non-stop. They actual need more instructors but they have a policy that they only hire from within AND they only take the brightest on as staff. I guess I better get through my training fast so that I can help relieve some of the strain there.

The past two days was ground school on weather and IFR x-cntry planning. Today I go on a short IFR x-country to Atwater.

7/28: Did 2.1 in 8035N. Shot the ILS/DME to Atwater and then the VOR/DME to Chandler. I am going to prep for the written this weekend and on Monday have the long X-country to Santa Barbara. I must say that after my first week here I am very impressed with Mazzei and know they will help me become a great pilot.

Hey, I live in Fresno! I wish I had seen this thread sooner.I'm 29, married, and am finishing college up in the Spring (I went back to finish college, finally. Should have never left in the first place. arghh!).

When I first moved here about 10 or so years ago I took a discovery flight with the Mazzie school and was quite impressed with them. Very nice people and they have been around a LONG time. Only problem, IIRC, was that my instructor was a somewhat good looking younger girl so it was hard for me to focus during the flight (hey, 19 yrs old...what do want!

) .

Enjoy your trianing and keep us updated.

8/1: Today was very interesting. I planned for a x-country to Santa Barbara, had the weather and was ready to file. When my flight instructor showed up I showed him all my planning and was ready to go. I mentioned that Santa Barbara was currently IFR with the morning fog layer but was forcast to have skies clear at our ETA. He then asked me how about the weather at our destination today. I looked at him with a puzzled look. Turns out we were not suppose to go to Santa Barbara. I forgot the name of the correct airport over the weekend and mistakenly recalled Santa Barbara (as a note: California has too many Santa's and San's). We eventually started from scratch and settled for a nice trip to Concord, then to Modesto, and finally back to Fresno. Got my long X-country done (3.4 on the HOBB meter) so now I just have the written to complete and prep for the check ride. I plan on taking the written tomorrow or the day after. I have another flight tomorrow in the morning.

Great news!

I'm sure you will do fine preparing for the written/oral/checkride.

How are you enjoying the training thus far?

Man, if I had a dollar for every time that happened to me as an instructor, I'd be able to buy that car I want.

8/2: Did 1.3 down to Visalia to shoot the ILS 30 and then back to Fresno on the VOR/DME 29R under partial panel. Flawless flight. My instructor says I am will within PTS standards and so now we are just trying to figure out if I can get done quicker finishing pt141 or doing a pt61 checkride. I took two practice test for the written (required to get an endorsement from Mazzei) with a 93% and 97% respectfully so I have my Instrument and CFII exams scheduled for tomorrow. To answer the question of how I like this flight school. It is great. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. People I meet for the very first time already know who I am. Very glad I made the choice to go to Mazzei.

8/3: Passed my Instrument and CFII written exams today with a 93% and 98% respectfully. Now all I need is 8.9 more hours under the hood to meet all the requirements for the checkride. have scheduled 2 hours tomorrow and 4 hours on Friday. Our plan is to have me done with my instrument by the middle to end of next week.

8/4: Today I had a local flight scheduled but the plane would not start. Seemed to have vapor lock but don't know for sure. It just arrived back from another training flight and when I went to start the engine...nothing. Still 9 hrs away from being instrument rated. Tomorrow I have a long cross country to Napa and Sacramento to build hours. Should get 3.5 to 4 on this trip. Came up with a schedule that has me going on my checkride next Friday. I can't wait.

Um. I just said it to myself an hour ago as I was flying back home.

8/5: Did a long x-country to Napa today. It was so nice getting out of the 105 degree heat of Fresno. On the way back we decended down from 7000 to 3000 about 15 miles out of Fresno and it was like turning on the heater full blast inside the plane. One cool thing was that the ILS at Fresno has been down for a few weeks and on the way in we were requesting the VOR and ATC said the ILS came up about 15 minutes ago and so we were one of the first to use it in a while. Nothing special I guess, an ILS is an ILS. Overall I got 3.8 hours and so now I am down to needing just 5.1 to get my instrument rating.

LOL....it's from "Airplane!". The part where the balding, comical FSS guy named Johnny drones on after Steve McCrosky asks "Mayday....what the hell is that?" "Well it's the Russian new year....." He goes on about Prince Charles wearing all of lady Diana's shoes, and drones off mentioning something about Fresno with the quote above. At least I think that was where the part was with the quote.

How about:

McCrosky: "Get me someone that won't crack under pressure"

Johnny: "How about Mister Rogers?"

or one of the best lines when Robert Stack and Lloyd Bridges are sitting at the radio preparing to talk to Striker:

Kramer : Standby Striker. Our one hope is to build this man
up, I've got to give him all the confidence I can.
Striker- have you ever flown a multi-engine plane
before?
Striker : NO, never.
Kramer : ( TO McCrosky thinking that the radio to Striker is off)
S$%$! This is a gawd damned waste of time, there's no
way he can land that plane.
MCrosky : (Radio is still on) Grab ahold of yourself, you gotta
talk him down, you gotta.
Kramer : We ought to route him in Lake Michigan, at least we'll
avoid killing innocent people.

Re: Mazzei Flying Service

8/8: 1.3 hours today getting ready for my checkride. Did a VOR/DME ARC partial panel followed by a NDB and then the ILS back into Fresno. My instructor said that I will make him look good on Friday if I fly like today during my checkride. Now I am 4.5 hours away from the required 35 hours to get my instrument. We plan on two more local flights before Friday to get the hours. The big focus this week is the oral exam. We spent one hour today preping me for it. On Wednesday I have the Stage III oral and then Friday morning will be the final oral. I am not worried, just going through the motions to make sure I am as prepared as possible. I am already catching myself thinking about my commercial training... just one week away.

Re: Mazzei Flying Service

8/9: This morning we went up to Madera to do the VOR Rwy 30 under partial panel and then the NDB at Chandler. We only got in two approaches because we had to hold at Chandler for about 15 minutes while someone else finished their approach. Got 1.4 hours today. My instructor and I decided that we are going to finish up my required hours in the sim to save a few bucks and to enjoy the buildings air conditioning.

Re: Mazzei Flying Service

8/10: Very long and busy day today. I started the day in the Sim and did 1.4 hours flying approaches into Oakland and San Francisco. The flight in San Fran was with lost comms. Very interesting to get to go through the motions of lost communications vice just talking about it.
Spend the next couple hours preparing for my stage III oral interview. The interview was no sweat. We went over weather, enroute planning, lost comms, and a bunch of "do you know..." questions.
My sim flight for tomorrow was bumped and I was at 32.9 hours so my instructor and I went back into the sim for another 0.9. We did a flight from Stockton to Sacramento Exec. I lost comms during this flight again and on the ILS rwy 2 approach I bloched the procedural turn and, long story short, got to experience a real (granted, it was in a sim) missed approach in the soup with no comms. Very good learning experience. I made it down on the next attempt with no issues.
This puts me at 33.8 total instrument hours and so with my checkride promised to last at least 1.2 hours on Friday I will have exactly 35 hours and hopefully my instrument ticket 48 hours from now.
