Those guys that told you getting out of the navy was the worst mistake because the civilian world was so bad...have never been in the civilian world.
 
What'll be real sweet... will be if the 15 yr retirement comes back, and I get a good deal for a change!

I made it. I am now in Fresno. Actually I am 30 miles south of Fresno because Fresno is dirty and extremly unsafe for my family. We saw more blue lights flashing in parking lots and low-riders full of Mexicans in the first 20 minutes in town than every before in my life. I stopped into Mazzei and it seemed like a very professional school. The ladies behind the desk were very courteous and the study room for students had a bunch of private cubicals along the wall for self study and then cafeteria style tables in the center for one on one with instructors or other students I suppose. I have my admin checkin tomorrow with their chief pilot.

BTW, the loan went through for me.

Don't know yet if I should be happy for going so far into debt.

It could have been worse. There might have been a bunch of blacks in pimped out Caddies, or even some Anglos cruising in their pick-um up trucks with gun racks and loud Country Music blaring!

Had my meeting with Mazzei and they were ready to sign me up for the full program and then I mentioned that I already had credit from a previous 141 school for instrument training and I even had my student records. They did not know how much credit to give me without an evaluation and they mentioned that if I didn't know how to do attitude flying then I would require retraining. I am suppose to get a call today from an instructor who will evaluate me and finish up my instrument rating and then I will enroll in the commercial single/multi and the CFI/CFII/MEI courses for a total of 28K. Much better than the 36K for the original program. They also mentioned that they currently have a fuel surcharge of $0.75 per gallon and it is all paid up front. With my origianal course that would have been almost $1,000 in additional and unexpected cost. I think I will fly less multiengine now since the surcharge is for each gallon of gas. So today I am waiting for a phone call from the school.
 
Oh yeah, the NEW Navy sucks...that is one of the reasons I got out. But civilian life is good most of the time, as long as you and your wife are going half and half on the bills. You ought to go into the Reserves because all we do is sit around all day and act like we have something to do. Besides its an easy retirement.

Me, myself I got tired of fixing all of the electronics inside of the jets, I decided to be like the rest of the naval pilots and start being a pilot(civilian) and breaking things myself.

Hmm. I live in Fresno and I haven't seen any of that. You must have been in the wrong part.
 
I was going to comment on this, decided not to, and have changed my mind. You spent 20 minutes max in this city and decided the whole place is dirty and run over with gangbangers? Let me tell you what happened. You came down the 99, probably got off at the wrong exit and came down Clinton. Congratulations. You skipped 3/4 of the city. Everything north of there is actually pretty decent. Granted, I don't like Fresno. But the reasons I don't like it here aren't going to change by living in Selma or Kingsburg or anywhere else in the central valley. There are plenty of good places to live and send your kids to school (Clovis schools are actually pretty damn good). You just didn't bother to look.
 
I did not mean to offend so many Fresnoers. Yes, North Fresno is very nice. I liked the skyway park, pretty cool seeing airplanes taxi on a road. My observation was down King Canyon Hwy at 9pm and yes we did see about 30 cops lights flashing in a 8 block strip and yes my opinion was set on that and plus my family does not feel comfortable seeing bars on all the windows and doors of every building in sight. We are personally limited on places to stay because we are traveling in a 5th wheel so if anyone knows of a nice RV Resort in Fresno then please let me know. The only places I found had druggies walking around all hours of the night. I would also complain about the heat but I do not wish to get slammed again. Lets just stick to the blog please.
 
7/21: My first day at Mazzie. I met my instructor, got a little background and then jumped into the Frasca Sim to do a VOR-DME with the missed and then the ILS back into Fresno. Liked the sim because we could stop and discuss things in real time. Tomorrow I have another Sim ride to get me back up to speed before we jump into a plane. It feels good to finally get going on my training.

7/22: One hour in the Sim today. Did an NDB and ILS approach. Went over the plan to finish up my instrument. The school has Jepp courses on DVD and VHS so that you can supplement your textbook reading. They allow free access to the written test computer (Lasergrade?) to practice the written. You can run through it in learning mode, where it won't let you get a wrong answer, and practice mode, where it will allow you take the complete test and print out a score at the end. You need to get an 80% on the practice to get an endorsement to take the actual written. At the end of the day I was invited to backseat another student on an IFR flight. Very cool day.
 
Get used to the heat. It's here for the next few months.

7/25: I got 1.1 in 35N, an Archer. Shot the VOR-DME and NDB into Fresno-chandler. Did very well for being over a year doing an actual approach. Was told I need about two more flight to get back to Stage II standards and then we will go right into stage III. Doing one to two flights per day should get me done with my instrument in about two to three weeks. Tomorrow I sign papers with Mazzei and receive all my student material. No flight tomorrow, just ground school.
