I'm thinking of buying a tri-gear maule...any advice?

All I can say it looks like a fun plane to fly.

I own 1/2 interest in a Maule MX7-180A (taildragger). It is a great plane and you get a lot of bang for your buck. The fuselage is fabric so you will want to cover it or have it in a hangar. It is a go anywhere machine and has great handling characteristics. If its just me in the plane and about 1/2 fuel, I can get off the ground and land in 500' or less. If you are looking at a 4 cylinder, definitely go with the 180 vs the 160. Feel free to pm me with any questions. Check out maules.com for some good info. My experiance is that fabric covered conventional gear airplanes cost more due to higher insurance and hanger fees.

Trust me, once you fly a taildragger you'll love it.
