Many Questions For All You Guys

Guys, I thought of some interesting questions that puzzled me when I have been watching at my local airport lately, please respond if you are really sure of a answer. Thanks Alot!

1) How can you tell the difference between a 757, 767, and 777?

2) Why would a Learjet get priority landing from a Cessna152? I saw a 152 about to touch down and get waved off due to a learjet about to hit him from behind on final for same runway, real close call.

3) Why does the Airbus have somewhat slanted gear until touchdown?

4) Does any airline still use the B717?

5) Why would a major airport (JFK) use a active runway going against the wind, instead of with it?

I assume in question #5 you mean take off with a tail wind instead of a headwind?

And the answer to #1 of course is that they all look different. Go check out www.airliners.net and check out the specks for the different planes, you will notice the difference.

1) How can you tell the difference between a 757, 767, and 777?

[/ QUOTE ]There are lots of different ways to tell. The 777 is the largest of the three and is most easily distinguished by the presence of six wheels on each main gear instead of four on the other types. The 757 is the only narrowbody type of the three. I suggest going to a site like airliners.net that has lots of airplane photos and looking at the differences.[ QUOTE ]
2) Why would a Learjet get priority landing from a Cessna152? I saw a 152 about to touch down and get waved off due to a learjet about to hit him from behind on final for same runway, real close call.

[/ QUOTE ]If a controller sees a conflict about to develop he will do something to resolve it, usually the easiest thing he can. In this case, it sounds (from the limited information provided) like having the 152 go around was the simplest way to resolve a traffic conflict ... in this case a faster airplane overtaking a slower one on final.[ QUOTE ]
3) Why does the Airbus have somewhat slanted gear until touchdown?

[/ QUOTE ]I assume you refer to the widebody Airbus products. This has to do with the way the gear is mounted on the strut ... gravity causes the back part of it to hang closest to the ground. Obviously, at touchdown it flattens out.[ QUOTE ]
4) Does any airline still use the B717?

[/ QUOTE ]AirTran Airways operates a pretty large fleet of B717s. Midwest Airlines, based in Milwaukee, is taking a few 717s, and Hawaiian Airlines operates some 717s as well. A number of airlines in other countries operate the airplane as well.[ QUOTE ]
5) Why would a major airport (JFK) use a active runway going against the wind, instead of with it?

[/ QUOTE ]Runway use programs depend on a lot more than the wind. Obviously safety is priority one and in strong wind conditions the runway(s) most aligned with the wind will likely be used. At JFK they have a runway use program that encourages them not to use the same runway system all day to prevent all the noise from impacting the same neighborhoods. For example, let's say the wind all day today at JFK is 010 @ 10. Runways 4L/R would be most nearly aligned with the wind. However, runways 31L/R would also have a headwind and would be safe to use. Additionally, some long-haul flights may not be able to accept the 11351' 4L for departure and may require the 14572' 31L for departure instead.

Hope this helps.

Well I mean, usually say if the winds are 030 at 10 and there is a runway 3, the airport ATC would make runway 3 the active. At JFK today the winds were 300 @ 13 or so and they used runway's 13L and 13R instead of 31L and 31R.

I mean, other than maybe looking slimmer or different, is there any other features I could identify them by?

About aircraft recognition; just keep looking at pictures and planes! I was the same way a few years ago, but without even trying, just because I always look at pictures, I am now able to tell the difference between different varients of the same type of aircraft. After a while you will see differences in shapes of the tails, noses, engine cowlings, flight deck windows, gear, etc. and you will see that the difference between one type of a/c and another are like night and day!

Definitely over time you'll notice the subtle differences between those Boeing twins... some(like the 6 wheels per side) things will become more and more apparent. The 757 has, i think the coolest looking nose. But from the shape of the tail, the cockpit windows, the overall appearance, you'll notice.

As for the 152 vs. Learjet... I was always taught "Might makes right!"

It's alot easier for a 152 hanging around the pattern to go-around than a Lear, that's probably IFR, that is burning a lot more fuel and has passengers or payload paying a lot more $$$.

The way to decifer them is easy. The 757's cockpit is one step down from the main cabin, hence the drooping nose look. The 767 cockpit is one step above the cabin and the 777's cockpit is level with the cabin.

There is one easy way to tell the 777 apart from the other two, look on the point underneath the tail (APU) on the 777 it looks like it is pinched, on the 767, and 757 it's a cone, I can instantly tell a 777 just by looking at the tail. After a while you can pick out certain planes by sound!

Also, if the lear were to go around right behind the 152, the jetwash/ wake turbulance would easily upset the 152... so keep the 152 for another pass and let the lear land, safest bet!

This is my first attempt to post a picture BTW I hope it works

In other words, the pics didnt work. To make them work with A.net pics, make sure it is the small format of the image, then right click the image>>properties then copy the URL.

[/ QUOTE ]

It could be a couple of things.

We can operate with a tailwind component of up to 10 knots. At JFK, they could have been using a runway that was easier to deal with the traffic flow.

Also, changing runways can be a big job that causes delays while they resequence traffic. It could have been that they were just waiting as long as possible to change runways in order to keep things running smoothly.

True that, I was on a Continental 757 out of IAH yesterday, and take-off is definately cool in one of those birds. Kinda like a decent honda with the pedal most of the way to the floor. Contract that to the ERJ I was in earlier in the day out of KCI, and no comparison. The ERJ was definately far slow initially on the take-off roll. Although I was on the left side of the plane on a southbound leg that left just before the sunrise, so gotta love that....

Honda???

Drive to your local Pontaic dealer...ask the test drive a 2004 GTO. The plant your foot....that is more like it. You'll never get V-8 rumble like that in your Honda.

Don't even get me started on the new GTOs! I'm not debating the car's performance, I don't care how it performs. The thing is butt-@ss ugly, and how DARE Pontiac put the GTO name on that, that, THING! My dad restored several GTOs, one of them took first in category at GTO nationals in 1991. The new GTO is a mustang-wanna-be, it's not even American-made, it's imported from Australia! IMHO it is not worthy of the GTO name. Sell it and call it something else, but don't use the GTO name on it!

This is not a GTO:

Sorry if I'm offending anyone, I grew up around a beautiful 1971 white hard-top GTO Judge. Somewhere there's even a picture of me in my car seat in the backseat.
