I have a heard a similar story where someone kept “borrowing” their older sibling’s vehicle. Except the borrower would put more fuel back in it than they used, so the owner (who tracked economy like a hawk) would be perplexed that they couldn’t determine why the vehicle would occasionally get better mileage.

I knew a guy with a similar obsession with his money. He was not a very mechanically inclined person. He bought a new Ford sedan in January or February and around July he asked me why I thought his mileage appeared to be drastically reduced. I simply asked him if he'd been using the A/C during the hotter months. Watching the bulb light in his head was funny.
