Mandatory retirement age now to 65?

I can imagine! haha

I didn't see the Greg Kinnear...I was thinking more like the lead in Tears for Fears or Robert Downey Jr in his younger years.

*kidding...

RD jr?

Ah!

How about Denzel Washington?

I'm almost done with my degree but I don't plan on going to the world of 121. The BS of jobs doesn't bother me usually but I know I couldn't deal with this crap.

Where did THAT come from??????

Most major airlines REQUIRE a four-year degree BEFORE employment.

Not that it's any of your cotton-pickin' business, but the majority of we airline pilots on this site HAVE a four year degree...and then some. Just to list a few for you, below are colleges from which a number of our folks graduated:

Embry Riddle
Auburn University
Rutgers University
University of Florida
University of Michigan
Western Michigan University
University of Miami (FL)
Carson-Newman College

As far as the retirement/pension thing.......who said "those guys should have saved more???"

Thanks for the rant, but try making it relevant on your next go-round. K?

Yup...that was a big ASSumption

Dues-USAF LoadMaster 4 1/2 years - Check!
Degree-BS Psychology Cornell University- Check!
Stuck-Patiently waited for the airline business to recover from 9/11 so I could feasibly jump out of this job I hate - Check!

For your information........as stated above, MANY OF US DO HAVE COLLEGE EDUCATIONS.

For example, I've got both a four-year degree and a masters degree....both from Big Ten Universities. I've served in the Marine Corps as well. Additionally, I've worked many different jobs, for many different employers. I've payed my dues.....as have many others.

However, that's a nice try for the suggestion box......NEXT!

Then Cruise, my post was not directed towards you. I also have a Masters (Big 12 - not too proud of the football season!!) and am older and at the regional level as yourself. Do I want to upgrade and move as fast as I can? Sure, just not at the expense of those that have gone before me. I don't think anyone should be REQUIRED to retire. This does not mean that voluntary retirements won't occure, since the traditional pensions are now extinct (for the most part), I don't think it will be an issue. Therefore those that desire to continue employment will because they want to, not because they have to due to pensions rules.

So the illustrious Champcar finally shows his hand. Are you 21 and almost finished w/ your degree, or are you an adult learner? Also, you're not in the 121 world and supposedly do not intend on entering it. If so, why are your panties so bunched on something that doesn't appear to affect you in any way?

Curious?

Sure, just not at the expense of those that have gone before me.

What about at the expense of those who are behind? Someone is going to lose in this deal, no doubt. Why shouldn't I be concerned that it's not me who is losing? It's very unfortunate that many of these people "who have gone before" lost their pensions. THAT'S NOT RIGHT and it's certainly NOT FAIR....but little in life is fair. Also, I understand it's difficult to pay alimony to the three EX's, pay for your 800K home mortgage, and still fund your lagging investment portfolio.

You say you're not for a mandatory retirement age.......if that's the case, what will happen at 65 (provided this passes) when these people start b!tching about "having" to retire because they need just another year or two to fund their retirements? Is 65 the brickwall? Will it be OK to force people to retire at 65? It's proven people are living longer....when will this stop?

Good Evening ladies and gentlemen......welcome onboard flight XXXX to whereversville. It's going to be just a little while longer before we can push off the gate, we're still waiting on the flight deck crew to be delivered from the nursing home. However, we can assure you that once in flight, you're in good hands.....we've got over 160 years of EXPERIENCE up front between the two of 'em and everything will be alright!

[/senario]

But hey, at least they weren't FORCED TO RETIRE! :sarcasm:

I'd rather have 160 years of experience than 3 years flying myself and my family around. Most other industries don't have mandatory retirement and you don't see too many over 65, so I don't think that is the issue. It doesn't sound like you know too many older pilots if you think they are trying to pay 800K mortgages and pay alimony to 3 ex's - that's the exception for sure! Most I know (and I know many retired pilots due to where I came from), are very conservative, and live well beneath their means with no financial worries. That's not a reason to be forced in to retirement.

Great so your not even a 121 pilot. Newsflash - if you cant beleive what you are reading here then leave.

The "I got mine, now screw you!" generation wins again. Thanks old farts! I look foward to funding your social security checks.

Haven't followed this thread closely, but this stuck out at me.

My business teacher was born in the '50's...a Baby Boomer and he has made fun of us students a couple times cause he says his generation is screwing (and have screwed) us and will until they're past. I know im not in the loop of what the Boom generation has done though so i dont quite understand. Anyone care to do a little brief edumication?

They're needlessly driving up real estate values, for one. Most haven't saved like their parents' generation did, and are counting on inheritances for their retirement--which they'll largely spend, leaving little to their progeny.

Ya know, just for the hell of it, I went over to that "other" forum to check out what they were saying about this subject. I mean, they are so naturally argumentative that a subject that divides people so well like this one must have them in an uproar.

I was not dissappointed. I have not even allowed myself to register at that joint, cuz I'll just end up being like one of em. I am glad I found JC!

Carry on..........

Franknes here isn't too conservative, this guy lives on a similar level as Tommy Lee. :)

With this age 65 ruling and how the baby boomers will continue to screw the younger generation I am seriously thinking about jumping ship and getting the heck out of the US if I get a good job offer. I hear China and India are massively expanding. Emirates has some issues but its probably better than any of the US passenger airlines right now. The only major US companies I would work for is UPS or Fedex. Otherwise Im outta here before all hell breaks loose, if it hasnt already.

Wow. Can someone explain to this (me) freight puke why the age 65 rule is so earth shattering that someone would consider leaving the US?
