Mandatory retirement age now to 65?

Uggghhh. Horrible news. For those that are happy consider this. With 1st year legacy carrier wages ranging from $28-44/hr(that's a rough estimate) consider what the rule change is doing to the younger generation. It's going to take us longer to get to a job which will hardly pay a living wage for the first year if not longer. Also consider that a pilot applying to a legacy now will be much older with a lot more financial concerns most importantly the likelyhood of a family at home. It's just going to take us longer to make the same amount of money over our career.

Kristie mentioned that hopefully the medical for 60+ year old pilots will become more difficult. Unfortunately I fear the medical for ALL airline pilots will become more difficult.

With the 70+ year old crashing the other week, and the 58 year old having a heart attack and a PPL landing the plane - seems like odd timing.
He didn't land the plane, the guy moved the flap and gear handles and worked the radios.

To everyone else.......give me a break, this is good news. You could train a monkey to do your jobs, so stop being so protective of it.

That is not the news I was looking for tonight. Here's to an extra 5 years at the regional level!

Who you callin' monkey??????

Anybody got a banana??

Wooo! There it is.............> :nana2:

Me? I'm not going to upgrade at my airline...... ever.....so as of this moment, it matters not to me.

I'm officially announcing "irons in other fires" folks. (read: not another regional though. That train has sailed ;) ).

Look up the history of the age 60 rule and see why it was put in place.

You guys have to think LONG term, how this helps the younger pilots out there. Like when we are 58.

Seggy.......I usually agree w/ you. But this time....No way! This, IMHO, is absolutely horrible news! :( I only hope it isn't true. While I don't think we will be able to keep 60 in place forever, I had really hoped it would hang on for another 10+ years.

This will slow movement w/in the industry for anyone who was hoping to move on to anything bigger. I don't know about you, but I hadn't planned on being where I am for the next 7+ years. Unfortunately for me, I don't have the luxury of time.....many of you younger 20-somethings think this is going to be wonderful and it won't affect you negatively. But those of us who need to move on (because of age) and begin to earn a respectable living need the 60-rule to continue.

Truthfully, I'm not really interested in the history of the "60" rule. What I am interested in, however, is MY CAREER. This is only going to mean one thing: stagnation! Movement for both yours and my career here at the regional level will effectively slow to a painful crawl....and that is a very bad thing.

It's all about you isn't it.

It was only a matter of time before it happened. So, we'll see if it happens. And, perhaps like Y2K, all the doomsday predictions won't come to reality.

Instead, perhaps a few perfectly qualified pilots who might have had the bad luck to go from Braniff to TWA to Midway to US Airways to a regional until US Airways recalls them as their career path (that's just a made up example) might catch a few more years of income. They're probably still FO's now.

Ok first off, like Max said, MANY want out earlier. They don't want to deal with flying till 65 and will make plans to retire as early as possible.

Remember 15-20 years ago, you couldn't get hired at the regionals till you had 3,000-5,000 hours of total time and then you could fly a B1900 or a Metro. With the low time pilots getting hired at the regionals today, be happy you are in an RJ with fewer hours rather than flying for a scuzzy pipeline patrol outfit to build up time.

Also, MANY of those that would have the time to move onto a major from the regional level, don't want to leave. They are making good money, have job security, and have a good QOL. They don't want to move on to first year pay at Continental and sit reserve in EWR.

If anything Regionals will have much longer upgrades, more people staying, and make a career out of it.

And let's be realistic, it was only a matter of time before it happened. Might as well be now rather than later.

As a matter of fact......IT IS ALL ABOUT ME!

....and every other fellow regional pilot out there that hopes to make it to a major sometime this lifetime.

So.......if I shouldn't look out for MY interests....then who's should I look out for? I have a great deal of time and money invested in this career. I'm not interested in losing another 7 years just because of a bunch of FAA pencil-pushers having some genius idea.

I absolutely agree about it being a "matter of time." But I whole-heartedly disagree w/ the now rather than later portion. As Champcar so eloquently pointed out......It's about ME. And if it happened later, it would have less of a negative impact on MY career..........

........and all my fellow regional pilots who are currently looking to move up the ranks, as well.

I also agree not ALL who are eligible will want to continue on........I definitely would like to retire early....but it's not gonna happen if I keep making regional wages....LOL :insane:

Someone going corporate???? All this secrecy.... :Sarcasm:

It actually is not that bad, Pilots who have the ability would wanna retire soon anyways. It sucks for the younger guys but you can look at it this way, we won't have any 19 year olds with 500TT getting hired to fly a complicated jet at a regional.

Very good point. If it does ripple down, hopefully this will be the case.

Doubt it.
