SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A pilot killed himself by intentionally crashing his plane into a field in Northern California a day after pleading not guilty to domestic violence charges, authorities said Tuesday

Zachary Cain Stickler, 34, entered the plea on Friday in Shasta County Superior Court to a felony count of making criminal threats and a misdemeanor battery charge, Chief Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Bridgett said.

The charges stemmed from an argument in February in Redding, California, that escalated and became physical, Bridgett said. The victim was dating Stickler, and the two were living together.

She reported online to police that her boyfriend had been violent and then left, and that her cellphone had been destroyed in the process, according to a Redding police report. She declined medical attention.

Stickler killed himself by crashing into a pasture on Saturday morning, Shasta County Sheriff's Deputy Dustin Reynolds said. Sheriff's officials responded to a report of an explosion around 8:30 a.m. and found a small debris field at the site where the single-engine Cessna crashed.

Text messages Stickler sent to friends and family before he crashed indicated he was distraught and planned to kill himself, Reynolds said. There was no indication he wanted to hurt anyone else, Reynolds added.

Sheriff's officials said they did not know what, if anything, triggered Stickler to kill himself.

Stickler worked as a flight instructor in 2014 at AFT Center Flight Training in Long Beach, California, said Jason Lamberton, the company's chief operating officer.

He was a skilled trainer who had a good rapport with students, Lamberton said, adding that he offered to provide Stickler with a reference when Stickler said he was leaving so his girlfriend could pursue an opportunity elsewhere.

"I'm absolutely shocked," Lamberton said when told about the domestic violence charges and crash. "There was nothing like that whatsoever in his behavior. The young man was very professional with what he did here. We were really happy with him."

He worked more recently for Aperture Aviation, an aerial photography company, which extended its sympathies to his family and friends in a statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration has assigned two inspectors to the crash, one of whom may conduct an on-site inspection, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Yes it sucks but he isn't the first nor will he be the last. You can go thru the Ntsb database and find several other incidents when the pilot killed him or herself by crashing the plane for years before germanwings and there is no media coverage.

It's just that the germanwings incident has focused media attention on this topic so of course the media will make a big deal about it.

Sounds like he was definitely innocent of the violence charges...

Seriously? What an ignorant and low blow thing to say. He was charged. Not convicted. Nowadays any of our lives and careers could be ruined by one argument and a phone call. You don't know his story or what transpired. There are so many BS "domestic violence" charges thrown out to men now days and the police LOVE arresting for it.

It's sad. This guy was possibly facing the end of his career and combined with deep dark issues with depression he might of just decided it wasn't worth it anymore. He probably had no where to turn and no one to talk to about it. Imagine feeling that way?
Even just talking to a Dr about it could mean the end of your medical and job. That is an issue with our pilot culture and something that REALLY needs to be fixed.

Mental health issues for our profession shouldn't be so punitive. We pilots shouldn't be AFRAID of reaching out for help when life throws you a curve ball. It's f'd up and I feel bad for the guy even though I don't agree with his method of dealing with it. The side effects of suicide hurt everyone and in this case it hurts all of us too.

A guy at a refinery my company owns drove head on into a truck after being charged with his wifes murder... Kinda obvious what happened there. And it sounds very similar to this case too, occams razor. I know charges don't mean convictions, but its definitely not the suggestion that you make about "BS 'domestic violence' " and how police just love throwing charges out there willy-nilly. You should do a ride along with your police department, and tell the victims of a domestic that their case is BS. You're right that I don't know his story, but you don't know her story either. A few friends of mine are cops and they all say the same thing, that 95% of the time you're the author of your own misfortunes.

It sucks this guy chose to go out this way and makes for a bad public opinion on aviation and pilot psychology.

Except that she declined medical attention according to the article and was mad over a broken cell phone. Not exactly comparable to murder...

There will always be cases of jealous exes and false accusations which is wrong and disgusting, even though these cases are few compared to the number of actual, true cases. But seeing the time it took to process these charges, and how theres more than just one, speaks to me that there is some good evidence this guy is more of a perp than a victim.

Too bad he will never get his day in court to tell his story.

Agreed.

Pretty much all it takes is a woman just saying you hit her and your ass is most likely getting carted off to jail. Have fun if you ever have to take your wife/daughter to the ER because half the time they're going to ask if you beat her and then think she's lying to protect you if she says no. But that could probably fill a whole 3 threads. Nothing is "obvious" from the outside looking in. Guy could have been a dirtbag woman beater, but none of us know that and probably never will.

Selfish and terrible as this guy's actions were I think it's incredibly distasteful to immediately start throwing that kind of stuff out there, and honestly it gets nowhere. Guy's gone, I'm sure his family is destroyed, not to mention the ramifications all around for his employer and the rest of us given what's happened the past few months. Terrible nonsensical thing all around.

The bright side of this is that he didn't take anyone else with him - and that makes for boring news, which hopefully will allow this to stay relatively low on radar. I hope....
