This is the worst part about it. There's a criminal crash site that is unsecured (sorry, some rebel in fatigues standing around with a gun doesn't count), that's being looted. I can't even imagine what the poor families are going through.

This was my thought as well. It doesn't have to be an organized group like Al Queda or something, it just has to be an individual bent on causing death and destruction. They've seen it's possible, so what's to stop them?

What I want an answer to is, what will the consequence be? So far there is none. Does this mean civilian airplanes can just be shot down and we're all going to shrug it off?

They'd have to get their hands on weapons systems that can shoot down aircraft at cruise altitude. That's a whole different ball game than getting their hands on a Stinger that's been sitting around since the Afghan war....if it even works.
 
What are the chances they will eventually outtfit passenger jets flying over Russia and the mid east with protection against missiles?

I saw a movie where somebody shot a missile at a plane, and the plane then shot off a bunch of flares in the back that diverted the missile. I think Nicholas Cage was in this movie.

That was one of the least "scary" areas to fly over.

Don't quote me on this but I read somewhere in 2002ish when we went into Afghanistan that there were no stingers left. Not that it even matters because they can't reach those FL's.

That would be fine for MANPADS, or other IR missiles, not gonna work for Radar guided ones

Can't see a 777 dumping chaff :)
