Making the PIC decision

I would like to congratulate brendan(sorrygottarunway) on his first big PIC decision. Yesterday on the way back from Redding, PA, after getting several briefings, and checking the METAR's, we took off. The METAR's and forecasts agreed that the ceilings would be an overcast layer at around 4600' east of the hudson river, with 10 miles or greater visability. As we were about 15 or so miles out of Farmingdale, we discovered that there was a broken layer at 3000', and we were at that same altitude. We managed to just barely skim that layer, as we advised approach that we were descending to 2500'. Getting an update of the winds at farmingdale, they were 050@17, with runway 1 in use. So we happened to get copious amounts of windshear. The decision came when we thought about our trip from farmingdale to danbury. The ceilings were more like 3500-4000', not anything above 4500'. With that broken layer that we discovered, we called FSS, and made a PIREP. Brendan then made the decision to not go until we were positive about the cloud layer, as he does not have his instrumet ticket yet, but is taking his checkride this week. Our route back would also take us over the long island sound, where an IFR Advisory was issued for likely IMC conditions. Brendan and I then called our CFII's to get their opinions on the issue. After that, he made the decision to wait a little while, and not think about the common "getting home-itis". Just wanted to publically congratulate him on that!

Tim,

Do you guys fly out of KFRG(Farmingdale) or somewhere else? Nice call as well, dont risk it.

good job....getting that inst rating complete will makes days like that a whole lot of fun...just be careful for the ice.

Good decision. Personally I don't like flying VFR in marginal conditions unless it's just out to the practice area. Filing IFR is so much easier and safer when it's marginal, and you don't have to worry about cloud clearance.

hey if you guys did fly into farmingdale which FBO did you go to. I use to work for Long Island Jet Center this past summer and christmas break.

one of the main things I learned from the flight:

1. flying without an instrument rating in the northeast is like driving in the winter without snow tires....

2. A stromboli from Ciabattas in the cargo compartment can cause an extreme rearward C of G

GAH! to be able to only break through that layer and not pester NY approach to let us through!

skygirl has CDW taxiway lights on her coffee table! Pass it on!

Ah, hmm...they're not taxi way lights. Secondly, they're not on my coffee table, they are the size of it. I was thinking of making them into my coffee table though, but the bright red doesnt really match the decor!

Hey guys, Angel here. :-)

I'd like to congratulate Brendan as well for a job well done throughout the flight.

I'd also like to say that it was nice meeting you three, Brendan, Tim, and Mindy yesterday. :-)

I only knew Brendan from when he frequented the flightsimnetwork forums but didn't know Tim and Mindy. Just wanted to say you're all nice people and it was very nice speaking to you all yesterday. :-)

Now that I've signed up at these forums, I hope to participate once in a while. ;-) However, I've always been periodically visiting the website for the valuable information within, and for the great advice many of the members provide.

Anyway, enough of my talk, lol.

Thanks a lot Brendan for the flight, and Tim for the continuous traffic watching, ha ha, and that stromboli!

I've posted some pictures of the trip. However, I don't know whether the guys at flightsimnetwork would appreciate a link to the post. Either way, if interested it can be found in the screenshot forums over there. It's titled, "Flying with Brendan on a X-Country (57 Real photos)". My username overthere is the same as here, just in case. ;-)

Later Everyone! :-)

That's a turbine commander and a Piaggio P.180 or something like that.

(The aircraft you couldn't identify)

Hi Doug! :-)

Thanks for identifying the aircraft and for looking at the pics.

I forgot to thank you (and Kristie ;-) ) in my initial post, for providing this wonderful site! ;-)

Well, what are they? For some reason, I'm thinking of the scene from "When Harry Met Sally" with the whole wagon wheel coffee table thing.

don't worry I'm helping Mindy plan her front yard of her future house so that the neighbors will be supremely interested in phoning the men in white coats ASAP.

AWWW SKYGIRL! I'm just kidding! It was cool to meet you finally!
