Major Airline Bases Affordability

Rent and cost of living has definitely impacted everywhere, though some places much harder than others.
I was looking at rent by city and rather surprised by some of the numbers.

Interesting to me to see that south Florida is now more expensive than even a lot of California.

I wonder if the NYC data is for Manhattan only as that’s technically New York, NY. If you consider Queens, and some parts of Brooklyn then that number gets much closer to Miami

I would venture to say they’re talking about Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. When you Google what specifically makes up New York City, all of those boroughs are listed. I know when I looked at apartments in Long Island earlier this year, they were starting around $3000 for tiny places. Found some spots around $2000 about an hour further out on LI, but not sure how good the areas are.

I know NYC is considered the 5 boroughs but I’m curious if the data from that article included the 5 boroughs in their averages. Not sure when you were looking but out of curiosity I just checked good areas around the SOC in Queens and I’m seeing many 1 bedrooms in the 1.8-2.5k range.

Over the course of a long career, home ownership can be pretty important. How does Jetblue and NYC area compare to the other majors in terms of home ownership? New hires at AA/WN if they choose can afford new build houses/townhouses that they have an ownership stake in.

I’ve heard of many newer dispatchers purchasing homes/condos within the first couple of years of their start date.

Forgive my ignorance lol but what is an ownership stake?

Not a major... Spirit is probably the most expensive base to live in, and pays embarrassingly low compared to cost of living in the area. I have heard some dispatchers live in their cars.

I very briefly worked there before getting a better gig.
The rumors of people living in cars are actually true. From what I understand, things used to be a lot better.
The relationship with management has gotten very sour and petty. If given the choice, I’d probably stay at a regional and wait for something better unless they raise pay. Adjusted for cost of living, pay rates for the first couple years are in line with regionals. They’ve been hiring like crazy though, since employees have been leaving in droves.
