Made the hard choice...

I have decided to get a 4 year instead of going the more immediate gratification route of a flight school. I really wanted to go to a school like Regional airline acadamy or something and then do online courses and get a degree. Instead I think I will get something like a history major and do the flight classes offered at my U aswell. Hmm... Dont know how Im going to work that all out. Do you think I am making the right choice?
 
Pursuing an education is always a good choice. Always good to have a back-up to aviation. Airplanes will still be here 4 years from now. And who know, you may just discover something you like better than flying.

Although, as a person who likes History too, it doesn't qualify you to do much other than teach...
 
If I were you, I'd take Chinese. Learn how to beg and plead for a job in a country where airlines don't provide their services at a loss... maybe they fill up their planes over there instead of burning up (precious, scarce) fuel with frequent flights of half-empty planes. Of course, in the U.S. we do that because the passengers are #1, and they're paying for that schedule frequency, so they should get it... what's that? They're NOT paying for it? They don't even pay enough to cover the airline's costs of operation? Then why are the airlines still flying them? ...because they just have to to stay alive? hmm... wierd industry...:confused:

Pal, all I can say is congrats on your decision. In the long run, as in the rest of your life, you will be glad you did. Don't worry about the major so much. You could easaly get a degree in Poli Sci, which is just really current history.

I will be finishing up my degree by August, and man that will be so good just to be done, and the end is in sight.

So way to go! I like your idea of the degree with flying. I think you've got it covered. : ) As a friend of mine told me years ago, "Don't get good, just get done!"

A history major is a pretty good degree. Large corporations like to hire history grads because they know how to do research and look at things from all angles. Don't listen to those who say history degrees are not good for much, because that is simply not true. To dispell any doubts, you could also minor in a business program of some sort to boost your resume that much more. That way if aviation does not pan out the way you hope, then you have a very good backup. Congrats in your choice!:rawk:
 
It sure sounds to me like you made the right choice. Not spending $80,000 for a CRJ/ERJ type rating at 500 hours (which the airlines will give you when they hire you) - priceless!!!

Teaching is a good gig. Weekends off, holidays off, SUMMERS OFF (time for flight training) and decent money.
 
I think you made a great choice. Congrats on looking at the big picture. My take on a degree is as long as its not technical (i.e. engineering,architechture, etc..) its doesnt really matter. If you are currently working, go take a walk around the office and ask what everyoen has their degree in. it will vary and most of the time it will have nothing to do with their current job. Good luck and dont let these other guys give you crap about for picking history as a major. That just goes to show there is no pleasing pliots. :D
 
Good decision, it's very similar to what I have done and I am happy with my decision as I'm sure you will be!
 
You won't regret it, having a degree is always a relief especially if things seem to fall out of place, you will always have something to rely on.
 
Getting a college degree is always a good decision. And once you get out of college, 9 times out of 10, you won't even use it. And 10 out of 10 will not have learned a thing that will be relavant to what the corporations are looking for anyway. There's a lot of on the job training. There's a difference between academia and real world. It's kind of like that theory vs. application thing...theoretically it should work like this...but once you put it in application...well... But everyone out there is looking to see if you have a degree period. They really don't care what you graduated with. After all, it's a BS degree anyway (pun intended).

Anyway, congratulations for deciding on college.
 
Hmmmmm college.

I have yet to find a viable solution to get a BA in computer science and have not run across any accredited campuses that offer courses for it online. I may have to get a degree in some other field that offers it online.
 
Good choice. History is a great subject.
I second the vote to learn Chinese, couple that with asian history or a minor in asian studies and you will be an asset to any company doing business with China (practically every company these days).
You will definately have something to fall back on.

very good, i am so glad!!! Congrats of course. The thing is I didn't expect to see this post in changing careers. I mean you are not exactly "changing careers" but rather postponing it so that you will be armed well when it comes to applying for airlines etc. I am doing the same thing for different reasons. I will be done with 2 years of community college by the end of this semester and I thought of starting at the local FBO this summer. But then I thought, hmm since I have no money I will have to take out a whole bunch o' money. But it's not worth it, not just yet. Instead I am transfering to a 4 year college in the fall and try to get done as soon possible and borrowing the least amount o' money. Then let's see where I can go from there...by the way my major is Humanities.
