Machado or Jepp?

I'm looking if I should invest in the big Jeppesen book for my IR or the big Rod Machado book.

I used the Rod Machado book for my private, and I really liked it. However, my flight instructor prefers the Jeppesen book for IR, so I'm just looking for a little input from you guys. :)

personally i think machado is a good comedian, but that carring it over into his books, it distracts from the important content.

IMHO (not you, personally) if you need entertaining in order to make it through material essential for safety, you are probably one of those pilots I stay quiet about because I'm thinking less than positive things in my head.

Jepp does a good, professional job of organizing the material and presenting it in an acedemic manner. While it may not be comprehensive, it does a very good job at getting most everything.

I obviously support Jepp over Machado's books.

Either one is fine.. They both cover the same material. The Jepp is more like a college text book. If you learn better that way fine.. If not there is nothing wrong with ol'Roddy's stuff.

The Instrument Flying Handbook, and Instrument Procedures Handbook, both available as a PDF from the FAA, FOR FREE, contain everything you need to know. And they cover way more than the Jepp book.

I'm getting the King Schools Cleared for Approach kit for my instrument

Cleared for approach is the book I recommend if you are flying Cessnas because it is based around a c172R and gives you tips and tricks to get you on speed and in configuration in that airplane. The videos are SOOOOOO boring but I the book is very good.

+1, but I'd recommend buying the books... It's hard to highlight in a PDF.

I always reccomend the FAA books. DPE tend to like when you bring them to the checkride. Plus thats the stuff the FAA will be testing you on. Read on the others after you have your certifiate in hand.

I learned with Jepp but pretty much always recommend the FAA books to my students. They are free online or buy the books if you prefer. Really up to you though depending on what your personal tastes are.
