Luggage Works

Do you commute and/or end up with your bag in a baggage bin?

If so, avoid plastic, especially if you commute on RJ's where you have to gate check your bag.

Otherwise, I think @Screaming_Emu had the executive.

I was strongly considering that one because I prefer a much lighter bag. However, after seeing all the ones with ripped out handles from some of the guys at work I changed my mind.

Consider the FlightCrew 4 with the side pockets.

I'm right there with you (regarding the lighter bag). That's the nice thing about TravelPro - the suitcases are relatively light.

I commute on mainline equipment (737 or Airbus). The executive does look like a good bag.

LW now has a metal framed bag that weighs the same as the plastic one. Around $250 IIRC. I'm getting that one next.

I do and I'm on my second executive. My old one was still alive and ticking until I had a wheel bearing seize. When I went to replace it the nut into which the bolt goes into had broken free from the inside of the plastic housing. This made it impossible to unscrew the bolt. I looked into having it refurbished. The cost of that was damn near a new one. With that knowledge I took the entire thing apart in search for a new way to fix it, but had no success.

TL;DR: I'm happy with the exec and feel I had a fluke failure, probably as the result of not replacing the bearing when it started making noise. I prefer the exec due to the cheaper price, lower weight, and lack of sharp metal parts protruding from my bag as it gets old.

I've had both bags. I can tell you without any hesitation that the luggageworks bags are FAR FAR superior to anything travelpro puts out. They will last you much longer and they have a great refurbishment plan (whatever it needs is all they fix and charge), which I've done once and didn't cost much at all. That was after 5 years of heavy wear on it. My travelpro bag fell apart in 2 years. What I have is the executive but there's no question it's too heavy. The Stealth Air I believe is the one with the lighter weight but still metal. I would buy that if i was looking. Their prices are worth it because you will lug this thing around every work day for a long time and best to have one that won't come apart on you. At my airline almost everyone uses luggageworks and I've never seen a ripped out handle. Just my perspective though.

Second the Stealth Air. A little lighter than their standard stuff, but still the metal outer frame. Had mine for six months of heavy use and have no complaints. For us, putting it under our jumpseat in classic aircraft is famous for ripping side pockets. So far, mine have held up well, but I dont put anything in the side because of that. It fits in standard bins wheels out, and any way you put it in extended bins.
Traveling on an RJ, you will have to gate check it, but so far, so good. It has survived intact every time.
