Luggage suggestions

Newly hired CRJ-900 FO. What luggage do the resident experts here recommend? I have a chart case. I'll need a suitcase and maybe a cooler.

Also need to get a good cooler for 3/4 day trips... Suggestions from the experienced are welcomed!

As far as luggage, I would highly recommend the luggage works stealth aviator. After traveling/commuting with mine over the past couple months and seeing the severe beating luggage takes on a daily basis, I wouldn't recommend anything else less robust. They are pricey, but buy it once, but it right.

I'm all for saving money, but your overnight bag is an item to spend extra money, especially if you are lugging a pubs bag.
For one, having a bag come apart in the middle of a trip is not fun. The handles are especially prone to failure. Get one with a single piece, metal handle.
Second, don't just look at the cost to acquire an item, look at how much use you get out of it for the purchase price.
Finally you want a bag that will fit in the overhead bin.
Go with a crew specific bag.

I just bought a new bag. What I found. Click the titles to bring you to the specific web pages with them:

Luggage Works original
  • Already owned it
  • Heavy 15 lb bag, seriously it will wear on you after a while
  • OK quality but still it was pretty well beaten, had to re-sew the main bag a couple times and most pockets were ripped
  • Expensive @ almost $300
  • Can really be stuffed
  • Looks like a professional bag
  • Various designs, DON'T cheap out and get the plastic framed one!!
Luggage Works Air
  • About 11 lbs
  • Less useful pockets as original
  • Unknown how long it would last
  • Expensive @ $270 (with extra pocket)

Costco Bag
  • $99 lifetime BUT you must be a Costco Member at $50-$60 a year as well
  • Outside of bag has very little usefulness as far as pockets go
  • Replaceable wheels on such a cheap bag, not bad to get you by first year pay, but not ideal
  • Must purchase online, the one in the store isn't the same (search Kirkland luggage)

StrongBag
  • Had it for two trips
  • Cost wise it's between the Travel Pro and LW
  • Due to the hard sided frame, it holds much less than the LW
  • Also due to hard frame, I ripped it on the CRJ overheard bin hooks. This is the main reason it went back

Travel Pro (what I ended up with)
  • Various lines, I picked the FlightCrew 4 Pilot 22, which has some minor upgrades over the standard F/A line
  • Light weight @ 9 lbs
  • Inexpensive for what it is ($150 on FlightAttendantShop.com)
  • Looks like an F/A bag
  • Has a nice expansion zipper allowing it to expand if desired. Haven't needed it yet but nice for when you have to pack for warm and cold climates
  • Front hook for flight case seems fragile, not a big deal if you use an EFB

Ultimately, here's the deal. Most will last 3-4 years and then go TU or requiring major refurbishment. I went with the Travel Pro due to cost, design, and light weight.

Bottom line, if you commute and have a flight case I'd get the Luggage Works. If you don't have a flight case the Travel Pro is a great deal and super light weight. I really like it.

I went with the Luggageworks 22" Stealth with ABS plastic frame. It's alot lighter than the metal frame and just as sturdy.

The Executive pilot bag has an ABS plastic frame. It also has eight external pockets for storage of all of your travel needs. The three-way attachment system is a standard feature for these bags. The Executive has a flat, not pleated, front pouch for a cleaner look. The front flap also has a side entry pouch large enough for a laptop computer. As with all Purdy Neat bags, in-line skate wheels with sealed bearings come standard. The Executive has a light weight aluminum sliding handle.

I have the Luggageworks 22" Stealth.

It has been refurbished once in 7 years, and that was this last summer when American bent the solid stainless steel handle. Rather than just replacing the handle, they redid the entire bag (no complaints).

It had 6 years of abuse at the regional level, and with the storage option I have now, chances are it would have gone a full decade before a refurbishment it (if hadn't been damaged).

Mine is going on 4 years, haven't even considered the need to refurb yet.

Mine is going on 8 years and I'm pretty sure can give you tetanus just by looking at it.

I'm glad it's made it this long, but I'm frustrated that they got rid of the DTW luggage repair guy at the Stopover Store (or whatever they're called now). Being able to bring the thing in to get repaired on a sit was why I originally got the bag.

I carry a 15 inch laptop (okay I'm old school), will it fit in a pocket in the LW Air? I purchased an Aurora from
crew outfitters, only to return it as the pockets were too small.

DO NOT store your laptop in your rollerbag. The LW computer front bag is a poor design, as the entire weight of your chart case sits on your laptop. Additionally, watch the ramps handle bags a half dozen times, and you'll see why you shouldn't put it in any rollerbag. I use the Aerocoast laptop/cooler bag and it's great! I never relinquish possesion of it.

I love my LuggageWorks. It was the best 300 dollars I ever spent. I have to send it back to get the zippers repaired, but it has gotten the s*** kicked out of it while I commuted between MSP and NYC, and all my trips since then. I am looking to get a 26" LW as a supplement to my original bag.

What did they charge you for the refurb?

I was planning on bringing mine in on Monday already.

I had the LW Stealth with laptop sleeve for about 7 yrs with basic wear and tear but then it was severely damaged, as in a tug ran over it and bent it. Got a new bag paid for by the airline that destroyed it and ended up getting the Stealth Air. Had it for about a year now and it is still in good shape, but I don't commute via plane anymore. I recommend it.
