Lufthansa Private Airport Southwest of Phoenix (west of E68)

Stomp16

You mean Shennanigans?!?!
What is the deal with this airport? Coming back from Tucson today we got vectored south of the mountains and to the west towards Luke. We see this seemingly brand new airport with not a soul or an airplane on it. It doesn't show up on the G1000 and has "Private Lufthansa" written across the taxiway. I did a search and nothing came up. Anyone got the story?

That's Mobile airport, 1AZ0. Been there forever. They have a guy who drives there and operates it, and the planes come in from GYR to do VFR pattern work. Nothing permanently based there.....it's merely an OLF. If someone was there, you could yap with them on 130.475.

Cool of you to say hi......being that you were in TUS and all....... :D

And vectored? What were you flying that required vectors?

I seem to recall it was a public use strip when I was out there in 2004/2005 but in very bad shape. Lufthansa apparently paid a bunch of money to fix it up.

I remember other instructors barging about doing low approaches into there and Stellar Airpark to "piss off the owners". They were SO dangerous!

My cargo company used to be based out of Stellar. Flew out of there for a couple of years with them.

We used to practice the GPS approach into there then, ofcourse go missed. Then shoot over to Chandler then Williams Gateway. I actually miss it out there quite a bit.

TUS was an alternate for us to shoot today. It was a spur of the moment decision to go down there. We got a mission done, landed at KRYN and had lunch. Filed IFR and made our way back to GEU and that's where we were vectored. It was weird seeing an abandoned airport. I'll hit you up next time we make it down there. Where are you based? Lets get together and meet up.

Out by MZJ. The restaurant at RYN is pretty darn good. That blue Huey still sitting out by the tower there?

In a better answer to the OPs question, Lufthansa has an ab-initio flight school at KGYR. The airport in question is used exclusively by that scool to avoid the congestion of all other airports in the valley.

I can't help that the war going on down here pulls me back from everything I want to do. :)

There was nobody out there though. Not a plane, car, person, nothing. It's like the apocalypse happened.

Flew over the field today enroute from Gila Bend to Chandler, actually saw an aircraft doing pattern work.

It's not constantly manned, like I wrote in my original post. It's fenced in, and a guy goes out there during the day to oversee pattern ops. So there are times it looks empty....because it is.

Seems weird that someone built an entire airport for pattern ops in addition to only being manned "sometimes".

It does, but they have the cash. And like a number of private fields, this is another one that doesn't appear in GPS databases in many systems.

Now there is a strange airport. Does the Army Aux field still let you do a touch and go down there? I used to call to get permission, do a low approach at Gila Bend and then follow the road to the aux field at about 500 feet, beat up the pattern there, follow the road back out and then head back to Willie.
