TACA, Swiss, SAS, British Airways, seems like a lot of the crews I see in and out of here have facial hair. Like people have said on JC in the past, I think it's more about airlines not wanting to play beard police. Sad day. :(

All I know is that my O2 mask is placarded "BEARDS WILL NOT SEAL".

I brought this up at FlightSafety a couple weeks ago during Lear 45 recurrent. A few months ago a ran into a Mexican charter captain that was flying Lear 45's. He looked like old man and the sea, awesome white beard. When I mentioned the mask placard and foreign operators with beards to FlightSafety, the instructor seemed to think its a CYA from The EROS Mask people. No one seemed to have an intelligent answer or background info. I may have to call EROS.

That's because captains of ships have beards. Apparently Lufthansa knows this.

Most of our Lear 35 crews have facial hair. No issues with the masks.

Have you looked around towards the bottom of the mask? The 45 has that placard that says "beards Wil not seal" I've tried it with a beard and it's fine. I'm just wondering since it doesn't say "beards not allowed" if its up to the operator or could the FAA and push the issue.

I have to imagine it's up to the operator.
 
Captains have beards. That's simply the way it is and should be. I think that there's nothing that says "I'm an authority figure" than a nice uniform and a beard.

Meh - there's been lots of talk about this over the years on JC, personally I've tested masks both bearded and unbearded with a diluter-demand and a continuous flow and notice no problems with sealing. I've tested that with a pulse-oximeter too and noticed no problems at all.

They also use a slightly different type of mask than typically seen up front on airplanes.
