You can normally work part time up to 20 hours/week after 9 months of study, and that only requires a signoff from your school. Why don't you ask them? My engineering school had a ton of international students, and none of them had any trouble taking part-time internships while they were there. Immigration doesn't even get involved with that.

Not all the student Visas allow that, and not all the School are allowed to hire.
At the end if your work is generating any sort of revenue, even if you don`t get paid is not going to be allowed in most cases....unless it`s like one of those ATPL programs, where a CFI giving dual given is still in training as an "intern". There are several flights school out there, Texas "cough" "cough", some mentioned on this forum too, where you work for free under the above system, but you actually get paid under the table.

My Flight School was not allowed to employ students that were not under a specific program like the J-1, no work for M-1 and F-1 in our case. Sure you can work with those type of Visas but the school has to have a program in force to do so also.

According to who? The school might not want to (their choice), but I know of nothing legally preventing them from doing so.
Which "program in force" needs to be there?

I know of students that completed my same training in terms of licenses but were not enrolled into the Instructor program with employment opportunity...the flight school needed CFIs really bad at the time as everybody was going the regional route.
Two of my friends under their Visa where not able to obtain a SSN, I was on a J-1, they had an F-1 Visa.

A school "issuing" F1 Visas is allowed to employ students on said visa.
The 2 Years you are ALLOWED to work on a F1 Visa are called:
1st year CPT - only restriction: work in the profession the visa is issued for.
2nd year OPT - to get that you need to do the ATP written in addition to the profession restriction from the CPT
with a letter from the school stating you have DHS authorization to work in the US you easyly get a SSN.

To add on to what has been said here, the J-1 visa is no longer an option for flight training.
No wonder you foreigners have to pay for your type ratings. Thanks for spending your money here. Now go home.
