Love at first sight?

OK, so first the back story:

When I started my PPL training I opted to fly the Diamond DA-20 because it looked cooler than the old cessna 150/152's at my local flight school. However, I have since flown with a friend who owns a Cessna 170 (1954 model) and have since developed an appreciation for classic airplanes.

So, for the last few months I peruse ebay and trade a plane just to see whats out there (not in the market) and came across an ad for the Globe Swift.

OMG. I love this airplane. I read an article by Budd Davison (Davidson?) about this airplane, and although it didn't exactly praise this aircraft as the pinnacle of aerospace engineering, I really really love this airplane!

Anyone else have/had similar experiences with different aircraft? I would be interested to hear from anyone who has flown the Swift as well to see if the horror stories about it are true.
 
Be careful about developing a lust towards certain aircraft based on looks. It's typically one of the first characteristics leading to degraded conditions for aspiring professional pilots. Before you realise that a plane is just a plane, you'll be in debt over your head, making 18k/yr, but of course living the dream!

Also, Be careful about developing a lust towards certain women based on looks. It's typically one of the first characteristics leading to degraded conditions for aspiring professional pilots. Before you realise that a woman is just a woman, you'll be in debt over your head, making 18k/yr, but of course living the dream

It's one thing to lust after a commercial aircraft, in which one is potentially looking to seek employment in. I think it's another thing to lust after a basic general aviation airplane, which has little use for commercial activities. I doubt there is a big job market out there for commercial swift pilots. But hey, I might be surprised.


But back to the topic at hand. I absolutely love the Antonov AN-2. Someday in the future, if I've got the funds and time on hand to deal with one, I'd love to buy one. Beyond that, I can't think of any other airplane that I absolutely would want to have.

I love the An-2!

I see you are from Florida, you should take a trip to Cuba (fly there from the Bahamas, your passport is not gonna get stamped), in Trinidad, Santiago, Varadero you see them flying all the time.
I have been in one, in the cockpit a huge ADF and a 3 channel HF radio....

In Varadero there is a skydiving company that has an AN-2, they take you up in the right seat with no problems skygators@cubairsports.itgo.com
 
There are actually only three forces in aviation, not the four that we commonly think of. Weight and Drag exist, of course, but lift and thrust are just different forms of this third force we call.... money!
 
Swifts are neat-o! AN-2's are cool. BUT...for a love at first sight thing, you probably probably need to see a Mullicoupe.

They were fixing up a boat, and there are lots of hidden costs if you don't know what to look for.

True in many cases...but.....


As an airplane owner though......I enjoy having the piece of mind knowing who has been flying my airplane/working on it for the past few years.

Instead of the stories wondering about what the last renter/student did to it and didnt report it, or what damage it sustained when someone did something stupid or attempted to do something.

Like the stories someone had written on the forums some time ago about wing spar failures, and the like of structural damage. I believe the thread went something like-previous renter/student/instructors did loops, stunts etc,.......only to have the next renter doing simple flight maneuvers to have the spar fail and results in an inflight breakup, or something like that, resulting in loss of life.

The Cessna I fly is older, and i treat it with much care and respect. Because indeed its my butt and my friends butts that sit in the thing.

And while i've had people ask me- Hey do you so spins, etc etc. I just tell them no....I'm happy that it flys well straight and level, and that i dont want to find out what would happen if i try to do something really fancy in an older/high time airframe bird.

Now i would like to try out stunts and such in the air....but i would like to do that in an aircraft that is build for such. Not the all purpose trainer/GA standard plane.

All that being said, yes i still do sometimes rent.....but i just treat said planes very carefully after looking them over well :)
