LOT 767 gear up landing in Warsaw

Out of curiosity, when's the appropriate time to use foam? It looked like there wasn't any applied to the runway where it was making lots of sparks, and it might not be necessary is there weren't any leaks observed.

Could they have any lamer of a livery?

It's got history!

Isn't there a way to manually lower the gear? I know the 727 has a manual release.

There's an alternate extension switch that will pop open the main gear doors with an electric motor if there's a hydraulic failure. The main gear rest on the doors in-flight, so opening them will cause the gear to free fall. Works nice unless the electric motor doesn't work...

So....

What happens that causes a 767 unable to extend it's gear? I thought there were a lot of redudencies to protect against this

Loss of center hydraulics would cause the need to use the alternate extension system. That secondary system uses an electric motor to open the gear doors and disengage the uplock from the nosewheel. If that electric motor failed alongside the center hydraulic system, there's no other way to get the gear down.

"On Wednesday cranes and air cushions were able to lift the aircraft off the runway with the engines remaining attached to the wings, the gear could subsequently be released and the aircraft was towed to a hangar for further assessment of the damage, which after a first check is said to be surprisingly small." http://avherald.com/h?article=4456bd6b&opt=0
