Losing a pet

My wife and I came home today from the doctor (my neck has been giving me issues) to find one of our cats at the bottom of the staircase panting very hard, and unable to stand up. Upon further investigation, we found he was paralyzed from the "waist" down and had no use of his rear legs, tail, etc. Vet advised we come in and apparently he had thrown a clot in the "saddle", the area of his aeorta that splits at his hind legs. Within 10 minutes of arriving at the animal hospital he was gone. I'm thankful we didn't have to decide based on money factors...he was in so much pain and so far gone, the vet said this was the worst case of FATE (Feline Aeortic Thromboembolism) she had ever seen, so putting him to sleep was the only way to go. This cat basically adopted my wife during college after he wandered into her apartment from the neighborhood and basically never left. Sad stuff indeed. You know, I hate that animals become so vital to your family...it's almost as hard to lose a furry one than a human.

Sorry brother on your loss. Pets ARE part of the family thats what make their loss so hard. My dog had really bad seizures we tried to control it but had to put him down when they got really bad. It was one of the hardest things to do.

Said it better than I could. :-(

Be grateful for the time you shared. Be thankful that a dignified merciful end was an option.

My most sincere sympathy for your lose.

Sorry to hear it. I had to have my dog put to sleep last summer after his kidneys failed. He was 16 years old, so he had a good long life, but it was still the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I think it's probably the only time I've cried since I was a kid. I know what you're going through. :(

Really really sorry to hear about little Leroy. He's a cute guy. The only good thing is that you were with him at the end and got to say albeit an unexpected, goodbye to him. Our furry companions are our best friends and see us through so much in life and we share everything with them. They don't care how old we are, how jacked up, what we look like, how much money we have, what kind of mood we are in, just nothing. All they care about is loving us and getting love in return. They are all unique as humans are and have their own personalities. It's just horrible when we have to let them go and very painful. I still miss every single one that has passed through my life and brought me so much happiness and love. They often accept us and understand us much better than most people do. They are always glad to see us and be with us. The bond is very strong. You did the only thing that you could do. I hope you both feel better soon and that your hearts heal. Maybe in time, when you are both ready, adopt another baby and give them the opportunity to have a good life with people who truly care. Pay some special attention to the other cats or cat, (don't know how many you have) because they are going to be grieving too. You can comfort each other. Again, I am so sorry.

so sorry for your loss, he looks like he had it great...you provided a nice home and loved him enough to do the right thing when required...what a great smile. I feel for you...

Thanks all, my wife is taking it really hard, especially considering she's lost 2 grandparents in the last 2 weeks as well. They say deaths come in 3's...here ya go. I'm doing ok, I miss the fatso, but now I feel bad for our other cat...they were best buds and he's walking around trying to find him...very sad.
