I'm a 30 year old ex controller looking to get my ppl. Looking for a CFI that wants free hours to help keep my flight costs down. I live in Eustis, about 15 minutes from LEE, and work in Groveland. I'm willing to travel a reasonable distance for flight time. I am just testing the waters to see what will work best. I am going to http://www.firstlandings.com today to get some info on getting the ball rolling. I've got about a $1k-$1.5k monthly budget for this. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

If I posted this in the wrong spot, sorry.

Patrick,

By "free time" are you suggesting that the CFI offer instruction services in exchange for time logged in the airplane, and not for a fee-basis, where you, the student, pay for instruction?

Please clarify?

CFI's have about as much interest in working for free as you do. So unless the CFI is a really good friend of yours, probably not going to happen.

There is a myth, commonly believed by everyone, that CFIs are just there to get experience and don't care about money. The reality is: most of the CFIs that you would actually want training from aren't there to build hours towards something else. And even the ones that are don't want to work for free (most have more paying customers than they can handle right now anyway).

My first three thoughts for a response to this "request", were 1) Downright murderous..., 2) Extremely Vulgar, 3) Really F'' Mean. But all those anger management classes and therapy sessions and such..."Wuhsaaaa".

So here's the more polite response. Please don't learn how to fly airplanes, really, please don't! I fear you might actually succeed in getting your license! Now, if you decide to ignore this and go for it anyways... I suggest you skip the flight instructor just go out by yourself. Nothing a few youtube videos and instruction manuals won't be able to teach you. And guess what...they're free! Well, you might actually have to pay for the books, so on second though skip the books too. This way you can invest your savings in a life insurance policy!

Crap, I may not have really avoided #1 and #3...oh well, back to the therapy! Others here might be a little nicer...

Maybe he means trade CFI labor for prepaid rental hours? For example, teach 10 hours and get 5 hours to use the plane later.

Good luck Patrick. First landings has some fun planes but those sport plane aren't vey forgiving. Better save up 10k first then start your training. 1500 a month with take you a year to get your license.
