looking for a new suv

I know this is a little off the aviation topic, but I am going to go out car shopping for a "previously owned" SUV. I am considering the Jeep Grand cherokee, the GMC Envoy, or possibly a dodge DAkota or suburban. Anyone have one of these, and if so can you give me a gouge on the best used suv out there....all experiences appreciated.

I'm not to partial to American SUV's, but I had a 99 Jeep GC Laredo 4.7L, and I would recomend it. Just make sure the used one you get has some sort of warranty, whether it be aftermarket or factory. Stupid crap goes out on Jeeps, ie fuel pumps, brakes early and often, front pinion gear, leaky window seals, etc. But they are really good rigs, and are pretty quick for SUV's.
Pretty much any American SUV will have some small problems, so aside from that I would give the Jeep the thumbs up. Best out of that group offroad too.
Cheers

it it worth looking for an 8 cylinder or is the 6 solid enough for the jeep gc laredo? im looking for some power, but dont want to drain the gas pumps either.

After months of research, I'm going to get a Liberty Sport next month. It seemed the best fit for what I was looking for and I have yet to read a bad opinion about it.

I LOVE my Tahoe. It's got tons of room, DVD & XM radio.

Might be a bit big, judging from the types you'd mentioned, but it can carry & tow anything you'd ever need!

yeah, tahoes are tight....i actually wanted to get a denali, but 50k was a little more than i could afford.

I don't know about the 6 vs 8 in the GC. My mom has an 8 and loves it. I don't know how GC's are. I have a Cherokee Sport. Its my favorite car/truck of all time. I don't think gas would change much no matter what engine you put in if it is like a Cherokee. That thing has the Aerodynamics of a brick. My milage varies by a whopping 1 MPG between city and highway driving. Jeep makes good trucks. They do have some small crap fail often and early though. I keep dealing with broken electric window switches in mine.

HEHE new Graemlin is cool!

I drive an Isuzu Rodeo and it is - by far - the best vehicle I've ever owned. I've had VERY few problems with it and it still runs like new. (it's a 1995 model). The problems I have had were minor (Alternator, a hose, a blown fuse - that's it).

I've got the V6 in it with the tow package and that thing will tow a load if need be. It's got all the room I need right now and the gas mileage isn't bad for a SUV. I get something like 16/City and 20/highway. Not great. Not horrible.

its gonn be hard to go from the mileage of an accord to that of a truck, but for a guy my size(6'5 280) i need something with some size....i got a rental car when i wrecked a while back and they gave me a silverado. filled it twice in 10 days to the tune of about 35$ a tank(ouch) but fell in love with a big truck......pickup isnt really mystyle, but i think a good suv is.

Rules out the Cherokee. I barely fit. I don't think the GC is much bigger inside as far as sitting height is concerned.

I was looking at SUV's and a Grand Cherokee would have been the one I purchased, but I couldn't get the financing I wanted. I would definitely recommend it, if the financial part works for you.

I own a V8 GC and love it! Don't really have many complaints about it. It's big enough to haul around most things I need to, yet not so big that it's difficult to manuever in parking lots.

I ve been quite happy with my Toyota 4runner. Although they are a bit more expensive than the competition I have been very pleased with it. I ve got 120,000 miles on mine and havent had to do anything more than routine maintence and a tune up.

If you can wait a bit, go for the new Jeep if you don't mind IFS.

It'll get you a bit more room, and you can get a Hemi, so power won't be a problem

Me, I have a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee. No real problems. I've had to replace: gas, oil, plugs, coil, cap, rotor, battery, water pump, alternator, windsheild washer fluid. Think that is about it. Outdoes a Toy any day in comfort, power, and MPG. And it gets used on-road and off-road.

In the Jeep GC's, there is a huge difference in the 6 vs the 8. The 8 gets the better 4wd (quadra trac II), has a ton more power, and the gas mileage isnt that different. Keep your foot out of it and the GC V8 can give you ~18mpg.
I have only test driven the 6, and wasnt thrilled. The 8 just moves around with authority, and can dance when you want it to.
Some other great recomendations on trucks. I say drive them all and see which one does it for you the most, and then stick with that one. Good luck finding the right one!

Go with a big SUV

I have a 2003 Yukon Denali XL.. and I love it!
Its about as nice as you can go, even nicer
then the Caddy Escalades

You can go smaller with the XL version for
a more sporty look.

how about the older model tahoes...2001/2002. some good models with low mileage on the lot. im gonna go test drive a couple tomorrow night.

Yukon Denali.. man, that's not some chump change your throwing into that thing! I looked that those before the BMW and it was just as expensive if not more....used might not be as high priced though...

have you looked at the Nissan Titan yet? My BIL has one of those and LOVES IT! It might be difficult to find somehting small yet with power without paying a price for it... keep in mind that the suv hybrids are coming out this summer... I've heard that they're cheaper than most of the suv's out there now (?) and good on gas!

Make sure the Escalade has the wheels that keep spinning when you're at the stop sign!

So when you roll up to the flight school for training, the CFI's know you're a force to be reckoned with! You know, mad skillz, dogg!
