Looking for a Good Valued Headset

Hi All,

I am currently on the market for a General Aviation headset costing not more than $150.00. The headset will be used for passengers, and as a spare for my students. Do you have any recommendations?

Thank You!

If you really don't like them, the ASA HS-1, I got mine for about $100 even if I remember right. Not bad but after about 2 hours it starts to kill you. I got the gel ear seals for about $25 but they were such a pain to put on that you'd be better off paying more for a better headset. The gel earseals make them a MILLION times more comfortable though.

After about 3 lessons using an ASA headset I decided to by my own. If you can spend a little more you can usually find good deals on DC h10-13.4's on ebay.

In my personal experience, you won't be doing your passengers or students any favors for 150. Add another $100 and pick up a DC 10-30 or DC 10-13.4. The extra hundred is leap in quality in comfort. Anything over $300 leads to serious diminishing returns.

If $100 more too much, buy them used.

The QFR Solo or their clones are outstanding headsets for that price. That was my first headset and I would still be using it if I hadn't gone to Lightspeed's ANR headsets. I still have my QFR Solo clone to use for passengers or as a back-up headset. On a Google search, I'm seeing prices of around $145-$155 for the QFR Solos.

You asked for a good value, but put a limit of 150. Cheapest does not equal best value. The best value is what others have said wit the DCs.

I always post this as an alternative to the traditional DC/Lightspeed/Bose recommendations...

Find a used Pilot USA PA-1779. It's a very comfortable ANR headset. They have excellent customer service as well. I like that you can disconnect the plugs from the headset itself if you need to. They're a little funny-looking but I love mine. For the money, I couldn't beat it. I paid $150 for mine.

I dig the hell out of my bose.

I like the Bose, and the Zulu's too (can't say which I like more).

The DC's are the best deal going though. They are indestructible. I find them comfortable, and I don't care that much about ANR/ENC.

Look for a deal on the DC 13.4's on eBay. I wouldn't worry too much about getting them used.

If you search CL you should be able to find a decent pair, I got my first pair of DC for 120 cash and some DVD's.........even got my bose on CL :rawk:

DC 10-13.4 :)

You'll have to find a few extra $$$'s though, but not much.

One piece of free advice on the 10-13.4's, someday you are going to lose one of the gel earseals. It will be at night. So, keep a spare in your headset bag.

The OP's question was the best value. Let's define that as (Price you pay) - (what you sell them for). You'll be able to sell a used set of DC's for at least what you paid for them used. That's the way I would go, even if it is a few more $$$.

I have had my pair of DC 13.4s for a few years now. Bullet proof headset. Like everyone has said, probably the best bang for your buck considering the price. I put a pair of the sock like covers over the gel ear piece, they keep the sweat factor down and are more comfortable IMO.

Buy $150 pair of noname headsets and they'll work for a few years, then they'll break and in the trash they'll go. Spend about $200 on ebay for a used DC 10-13.4 and you'll get a more comfortable headset that you'll have forever. If you want value, you won't do better than that.
