Logging Sim Instruction

Hi Folks:
I have asked this question among the instructors at my school and have been getting mixed answers. Do you, as a CFI, log simulator instruction in YOUR logbook? I realize it wouldn't be flight time but it would be dual given (or 'as flight instructor' in my new Jeppesen logbook). We have Precision Flight Control MFD Simulators at my school. Thanks!

Let's start with a real low lever - the FAA does not require an pilot to keep track of flight instruction given. AFAIK, the only FAA arm that even asks for a count of it is if you apply to be a DPE (although I wouldn't be surporised if it was on a FAAST application also).

But, it is instruction given, I guess for no other reason than insytruction received can be in a simulator. Also, instruction given in a simulator or FTD is "pilot time" (although as you point out, not "flight" time), so it does count toward ATP totals.

"Pilot time" is defined in FAR 61.1:

"Pilot time means that time in which a person -
(i) Serves as a required pilot flight crewmember;
(ii) Receives training from an authorized instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or flight training device; or
(iii) Gives training as an authorized instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or flight training device."

I', not sure I would put it in the same column as my other dual given, though. Even the DPE application separates instruction in a sim from instruiction in aircraft. And to be useful for ATP totals, you also need to be able to pull it out separately.

I *think* I logged mine as simple "dual given" and not total. Not necessarily as time building, just as a backup to know how much the boss man owed me.

I log sim time as FTD and dual given not total. The only real advantage to logging sim time that I see is if you plan on getting another job as an instructor then you have more dual given in the ole logbook.

I log it as dual given... Just like Mark said, it doesn't seem to count for anything really. I think the main reason why I put it in there is so that I know what logbooks I have signed. Afterall, you are putting your signature in someone else's book, may as well have a record of it in yours too?
