Logging PIC on a BFR

Let's say a pilot has not had a flight review within the last 24-calendar months, and thus is not current to act as PIC. Now this pilot decides that she wants to get current again and take a BFR.

Can she log PIC during the BFR? She's rated in the category/class and even though she's flying with an instructor I don't think she could log it as PIC. Am I right?

She can log it as PIC because she is rated in cat/class and sole manipulator of the controls. She need not be current to LOG it as PIC. She would need to be current to ACT as PIC. Two different things.

Bust out your FAR's for the exact number, it's in there. Then write it verbatim on the back of your eyelids. This is pretty basic stuff that instructors need to know.
 
I just read FAR 61.56 and from what I can see you are correct. The person would not be able to log PIC until after the BFR when they "become" current.

edit.....the logging is covered under 61.51E(1i)

so reading 61.51 ESF is correct. But for me reading 61.56 I get hung up on the acting vs. logging. It doesn't make sense to me that you can log something for which you cannot "ACT". But just typing it, it makes more sense because before I rec'd my IR, I could log PIC (actual IMC) but yet I could not ACT as PIC in IMC because I did nto have my rating yet.

I agree with MidLife - it is the difference between "Acting As" and "Logging" PIC. The pilot can log it, since they are rated for the a/c, but cannot "Act As PIC" until the BFR is complete.

I thought the same thing until I read AOPA's article on BFR's, ... which states:

"How do I log the flight time?
Because the regulation specifically states "1 hour of flight instruction," it must be logged as dual instruction received. However, in accordance with FAR 61.51(c)(2)(i), you may also log, as pilot in command, that time during which you were the sole manipulator of the controls, provided that you have a current flight review. "

Since that said you could log PIC provided that "you have a current flight review," I figured you could not log PIC w/o a current flight review ...
